Many of these newer downtown ballparks the hotels are within walking distance and it's pretty much up to the players to get themselves there.
Even when there is a team bus - like from Manhattan hotels out to Shea - it's not required that one be on it as long as you get to the park on time via some other method. Lots of players will cab or even subway themselves out there.

I can imagine football coaches blowing a gasket at just the thought of players not taking a team-arranged transport.

Rockin' Doc
Jun 08 2008 03:16 PM

Thanks Knot. I guess I just thought that when on the road, the team would travel over to the ballpark together. Petco Park is within easy walking distance from numerous hotels in San Diego.

about why he's up I guess. If he doesn't get through the sixth or barely through

He ain't exactly got bat.

It was a gapper that he caught up to and snagged as it went over his head, arms outstretched, hugging the wall.
So he wasn't going straight back like Mays.
But the fact that it was in the gap and he had to get there, and the wall was so close...I dunno.
Might top Willies classic catch.

bmfc1
Jun 08 2008 05:24 PM

This is what I wrote this morning and I think that it's even truer right now:

The last three nights, I've stayed up until 1 to watch our team. This is quite an accomplishment, as I get up at 4:45 during the week, but it's not as big an accomplishment as scoring a total of three runs in three games to a lousy team. I'm pissed off at myself for letting myself believe again after they won 7 of 10, but I'm more pissed off at the management of the team for letting things get this way.

I would feel sorry for the Wilpons--after all, they are the ones writing big checks for this lousy performance--but then I remember that they mishandled the WR situation on Memorial Day. They didn't fire him, they didn't give him a "vote of confidence", they just let him be. He sat Delgado for a day--wow, what balls!--and the press thought that Willie was going to manage by a new set of rules from now on. Instead, he's the same milquetoast personality who sends up Robinson Cancel, who hasn't had an AB in the majors since 1999, in a big spot when he has the decent Ramon Castro on the bench. And where was Willie when Santana got hit by a pitch but didn't get to take first base because the ump said that he offered at the pitch? How about showing some fire? Your team is sucking, your billion dollar pitcher gets hit, and you mildly argue? Are you kidding? Willie says that a big argument isn't his style but his style isn't winning enough games.

I would feel sorry for the Wilpons but they are the ones that brought us a GM who has done nothing this season to help the team. The Mets are supposed to WIN NOW and yet, in the last three days, we have seen Abraham Nunez, Robinson Cancel, and Raul Casanova come to bat in clutch situations. And Fernando Tatis, who wasn't even good enough to get a call up to the team last September, is almost a regular. Other teams make trades to help our team, our GM uses the unemployment line.

I would feel sorry for David Wright, Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes, who are better than the team, but where we they late in the game? Watching curves go by. but also sitting on the bench sulking. Stop crying, get up, and cheer on your teammates.

I feel sorry for all the Mets fans who were loud and proud in SD last night; I feel sorry for us for believing and not being rewarded. The rest of them can go to hell. At least until 4 PM today.

The worst part --- the worst part about being me, Hobson --- is that this sweep was so much like our 2007 collapse. We generally got the first lead, and then started playing to hold it rather than tack on. And, of course, we failed to hold it. Willie's bullpen moves seemed alternately overly cool and overly panicky, with none of the penners aware of a clear role for themselves.

Peeps are playing afraid.

Frayed Knot
Jun 08 2008 08:22 PM

This was truly a weird game - not to mention Murphy's Law all over the place.

- Virtually every Padre hit (until Clark's of course) was either a bloop or seeing eye. They had a ton of hits but they were all singles until the 8th when they got that bloop "double" and then Clark's HR.
Many of the outs were harder hit than the "safes" all game long.

- Two plays that weren't made (three really) cost us runs:
1) Delgado getting caught between hops and not getting the out at 1st
2) Reyes getting turned around on that bloop
3) Home ump Laz Diaz not calling Clark out on the 2-2 pitch (looked good on the overhead shot)

My only solace is that I don't think it can get any worse.
