IGT, 6/12, The first game of the rest of our lives

AG/DC
Jun 12 2008 10:10 AM

Let's steamroll.

According to bfmc, it's

  1. SS Jose Reyes

  2. RF Endy Chavez

  3. 3B David Wright

  4. CF Carlos Beltran

  5. 1B Carlos Delgado

  6. 2B Damion Easley

  7. C Ramon Castro

  8. LF Fernando Tatis

  9. LH Johan Santana

Thanks for the nod, but it's according to John Delcos:

It’s not official, but count on Moises Alou going on the DL again. The Mets are waiting for the MRI results, but Alou just said, “I think the DL is a possibility … I know my body and this feels like more than a few days away.”

Farmer Ted
Jun 12 2008 10:38 AM

WTF? Alou plays one game and he's shelved again?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jun 12 2008 10:40 AM

That's incorrect: He only played half a game.

AG/DC
Jun 12 2008 10:45 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I beliive he's extending a career DL record.

Can hardly guess at who'd be close.

AG/DC
Jun 12 2008 11:19 AM

And... we're under way.

Chris Young goes down swinging.

Augie Ojeda is hit by a pitch and reaches.

Orlando Hudson flies out to Beltran.

Conor Jackson goes down looking at a fastball on the inside part of the plate.

Centerfield
Jun 12 2008 11:31 AM

Not a very intimidating lineup the Mets are running out there these days.

AG/DC
Jun 12 2008 11:33 AM

A hit and two lineouts in the first inning. We'll see where that gets us.

Gwreck
Jun 12 2008 11:41 AM

I like Johan striking out the side in the 2nd.

I wish he wouldn't take 22 pitches to do so.

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 12 2008 11:42 AM

Wow. Santana strikes out the side in the second. (And had two in the first.)

That's the way to do it when you have Fernando Tatis in left field.

Alou isn't available (the sun shifted imperceptibly this afternoon, requiring Moises to undergo an MRI).

Benjamin Grimm

I guess that means that Alou will go on the DL about 11 days from now.

AG/DC
Jun 12 2008 11:53 AM

Yeah, he revolted against that 94-MPH fastball.

It was pitch number nine also (or two innings for Greg Maddux). I dig when pitchers go that deep into a matchup only to give up a shot.

I mean, I dig when opposing pitchers go that deep into a matchup only to give up a shot.

Ralph and Ron arguing (actually mildly contentious) over Willie removing Pelfrey in the ninth last night. Nice when Kiner is treated like one of the guys.

Who took which position?

Me, I would have kept Pelfrey in until there was one more baserunner.

AG/DC
Jun 12 2008 12:04 PM

A well-rested David Wright slides into third safely. But we don't have that guy.

Honestly, he's been a frequent violator in this year's Great List of Basepath Outs.

Radio guys were saying that not only should Upton have caught Wright's hit, but Wright shoulda been on 3rd but coasted. Laziness all around.

Let's thank Orlando Hudson for returning an idiotic favor.

Ralph didn't want him taken out. Ron thought with a losing streak in progress you go to your closer. Ralph brought up Warren Spahn.

AG/DC
Jun 12 2008 12:42 PM

Two out and two on and you're not excited to see him come up, huh?

I'm cahnfident that Pascucci gets called when Alou hits the shelf again. Then the two of them are locked in mortal combat with Aguila until Pagan is ready.

You don't want to be in mortal combat with a Samoan. Their centers of gravity are wicked low.

Santana btw 9 K's, 96 pitches thru 6

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 12 2008 12:51 PM

Santana through 6: 96 pitches, 9 strikeouts, 2 walks, 2 hits.

The pitch count is probably too high to expect him to go the distance, but I do like to see a CG/ShO.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Tatis should only play left field in an emergency. Treat him like he's Rusty Staub in 1985.

Favorite yearbook page of all-time: 1976 Kingman picture with cutouts of boxscores demonstrating his versatility: He plays left! He plays first! He plays third!

Rusty treatment for Tatis crossed my mind last week. Nothing's too crazy if it helps win a game.

Vic Sage
Jun 12 2008 03:35 PM

who, exactly, could they trade for prospects?

Your not trading young vets in their prime like Wright and Reyes, or Maine. Not Santana. Church? you just traded a prospect to get him, and he's produced, when healthy.

Your not getting any prospects for Schneider, Delgado, Alou or Castillo.

Beltran? He's still one of our most productive players, even if he's not having an MVP year. What's the point of having Santana if you don't have support like Beltran?

The bench? please.

The rest of the rotation? Pelfrey IS a prospect. Ollie and Pedro are FAs. Maybe we can get something for them as rentals, but probably nothing worth losing their upside for the balance of the season.

The bullpen? Have you seen it lately? Maybe somebody wants Wags' $10M contract, but its not like we have somebody to step in any time soon.

I don't see any moves. There'll be some off-season moves, certainly, but more like tweaking. They are not going to tear down the middle of the team after they just traded for and signed Santana. they're not going to move into their new stadium with a team of prospects and suspects.

bmfc1
Jun 12 2008 03:38 PM

Billy Wagner, whatever you say about him, is tougher than most of the ballplayers. He has a weekly (paid) interview on ESPN radio in NY and he's there now. He could have made something up but he didn't. He also said that if he does his job, the team is doing OK--"I'm not doing my job."

John Cougar Lunchbucket

G-Fafif
Jun 12 2008 03:56 PM

I've noticed a couple of times that as soon as the SNYcast is thrown to Matt Yallof, after a horrendous loss, he makes a big point that Heilman or Wagner (those two in particular) is a good guy who we know will be at his locker answering whatever is asked of him.

As JCL said, BFD.

I don't see any moves. There'll be some off-season moves, certainly, but more like tweaking. They are not going to tear down the middle of the team after they just traded for and signed Santana. they're not going to move into their new stadium with a team of prospects and suspects.

BAH! Stop raining on my parade of hate!

I in fact blame Matt Yallof for everything. He's the cheerleader disguised as a journalist who goosed everyone's expectations.

]Billy Wagner, whatever you say about him, is tougher than most of the ballplayers. He has a weekly (paid) interview on ESPN radio in NY and he's there

screw that, you're not tough for showing up to a PAID interview.

I guess we are the laughingstock of MLB...The Mets have been perrenial losers since the beginning with several extreme highs.

My gripe is that management sold me a bill of goods that 2006 til the present would be something special and the talent appears there

As Johhny Rotten said after the last Sex Pistols gig "Did you ever feel cheated"

I've never felt cheated by the Mets..but I do by this corporate built to win team that has turned into a nightmare the comes back every night.

Heck lets get a few prospects..oops Moises hurt again..and just relax and enjoy the summer

We won't be that lucky.

I'm totally unfair to Wags but he was never my favorite guy. My complaint about is part about him being a loudmouth with a history of wearing out his welcomes; and part with the Mets for having solved the "closer problem" they had so lazily and uncreatively: They simply threw the most money at the biggest name, and that happened to be Wagner.

And while he brings obvious talent to the mix, the main argument for bringing him in was to take everyone off the hook, allowing the org to throw up their hands and say "What?!? We did the best we could!" when he falters like all closers eventually do. They didn't want the pressure of a "quarterback controversy." They didn't have the courage to give the job to a guy like Heilman. They could have learned from the Looper years that any dude with a decent arm could save 40 games -- as long as he was healthy. They didn't.

Of course to get Wagner they not only gave too much $$ but way too much security, basically giving him carte blanche to act like a jackass when it suits him, get the manager fired if he doesn't like him, "courage" to stand up before reporters and blow them away with his humility when he screws up, and a forum to polish his public brand image which he knows will come in handy when those writers consider him on their HOF ballots.
