U.S. Open - Torrey Pines

Tiger starts with a 1-shot lead following an up and down day on Saturday capped by a bomb of a putt on 18 for Eagle after limping up there on his (recently) surgically repaired knee.

However he's started double-bogey/bogey on 1 & 2 and has lost the lead.

He has famously never lost a major when he led starting round 4 -- just as he's never come from behind on the final day either.

Tiger takes back the lead with a birdie at the 11th
1 shot right now over both Lee Westwood and Rocco Mediate

Rocco one under and in the clubhouse, Tigger even on 18

We'll see you tomorrow. Tigger vs Rocco

I guess he should have supported Casey Martin back in the day.

Tiger started the day with the lead, lost it immediately with a horrible first two holes, fought back to have it for a while, then lost it late before justbarely sneaking in a birdie putt on 18 to force a playoff.
Englishman Lee Westwood just missed making it a 3-way playoff.

Fun finish - even if I do hate the fact that only this tourney opts to decide it with a full 18-hole playoff the following day.
Most others go one hole at a time in a pre-arranged order and knock out players via sudden death. Even the British Open plays a pre-arranged 4-hole playoff which is long enough to make it interesting but short enough that it can still be done same day.

I usually root against Tiger anyway (no particular reason, I just do) but Rocco is an especially easy guy to pull for. He looks like he's enjoying himself out there and doesn't treat the round like dental surgery. He'll be a big underdog tomorrow but it'll be his first major if he pulls it off and will be the oldest major champ ever (45) first time or not.

Meanwhile, it's back to Bethpage next year

* And I just became Koooooooz!

Am I a cynic? Or did it seem like Tiger's knee seemed to act up more after bad shots than good one?

Frayed Knot

You're a wonderful cynic.

All even through 5 holes so far:
Tiger: PAR - PAR - BOGEY - PAR - PAR
Rocco: BOGEY - PAR - BIRDIE - PAR - BOGEY

Tiger went up by two after 7 holes, but Rocco got back within one after 8.

I wish I was home watching this.

Well, at least it's not a blow-out so far.

Tiger is on the 18 green (barely) in two. He has an eagles put from another area code. Rocco is on the green in three. He has roughly 20 feet from pin high and left for birdie. Awesome drama.

Tiger misses wide right and has about 5-6 feet for his birdie. Rocco has his for the win.

Rocco misses just left. Now Tiger must make to draw even and force more extra holes.

Both make their putts to shoot even par on the day. Now it's on to a sudden death playoff.

By the knickers of Payne Stewart! Woods gets the Bird.

#18 been bery bery good to Tiger

-- eagle on Saturday, then Birdies on both Sunday (to force the playoff) and again on Monday (to prolong OT)

As soon as Rocco decided to lay up on the 18th, he opened the door for Tiger's birdie.

Double overtime!

Does that make it a bad move?

Methead
Jun 16 2008 02:19 PM

With a one-shot lead, no.

But FK is right, Tiger owned the 18th all week.

Tiger's in control here, two putts away, while Rockstar lies in a bunker.

It was better than splashing it in the water in front of the green. It would have been a very risky move to go for it by Rocco. Tiger's ball probably didn't clear the water by more than a few feet.

Woods.

For Rocco this would have been the highlight of a career.

For Tiger this is .... Monday.

Just watched the highlights on ESPN.com. What an incredible day for golf. Maybe the 18 hole tiebreaker isn't such a bad idea.

Methead
Jun 17 2008 12:10 PM

Yeah, I just caught some highlights when I went to get lunch.

Tiger's approach on the 18th yesterday took some brass cojones.

And I also love the 18-hole playoff.

Tiger's season is over.

Yup.
Torn ligaments in the knee and stress fractures of the tibia.

No British Open, no PGA, no Ryder Cup.

AG/DC
Jun 18 2008 09:05 PM

Well, I'll kind of be more interested to see a Tiger-free Ryder team.

Frayed Knot

I think Tiger prefers a Ryder Cup without Tiger in it too.

Centerfield
Jun 19 2008 08:13 AM

Ok, so I guess he wasn't faking.

Frayed Knot
Jun 19 2008 10:56 AM

Maybe not, but Retief Goosen agreed with you.

Goosen (finished in a tie for fourteenth at Torrey Pines) was asked whether he believed that Woods was faking the extent of his pain;
“I think so. It just seemed that when he hit a bad shot his knee was in pain and on his good shots he wasn’t in pain. You see when he made the putts and he went down on his knees and was shouting, ‘Yeah’, his knee wasn’t sore. Nobody really knows if he was just showing off or if he was really injured. I believe if he was really injured, he would not have played"

AG/DC
Jun 19 2008 11:01 AM

Ah, he's just jealous, because all the Euro golfers had their eye on Jesper's nanny first.

I think we all know pain is more acute when accompanied by disappointment, and more tolerable when accompanied by joy.

Rockin' Doc
Jun 19 2008 11:07 AM

Yeah, but that's because we're all Mets fans.

Centerfield
Jun 19 2008 12:44 PM

If anyone knows pain, it's Retief Goosen, who was struck by lightning and nearly killed.

Frayed Knot
Jun 19 2008 02:17 PM

I hadn't heard that.

I know Lee Trevino was struck a bunch of years ago, which not only screwed up his game for a while but also provided him with one of the great golf jokes of all time.

- Hey Lee, what'll you do next time you're out golfing during a lightning storm?

LT: Hold up my one iron

- But won't that make you a more likely target?

LT: No, because even God can't hit a one iron
