Good start to this game by Jose. I'm too tired to make it through all this game, but I think watching a few innings of Santana pitching will make me feel a lot better about this team.
Oh, great- Reyes looks hurt.

KC
Jun 17 2008 08:10 PM

eeek, Reyes grabbin' at some hammy after a base hit up the middle.

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Jun 17 2008 08:11 PM

And some arguing with Manuel.

metirish
Jun 17 2008 08:11 PM

Reyes not happy a bout being replaced .

KC
Jun 17 2008 08:11 PM

And Reyes seems pissed with the new skip as he's removed.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jun 17 2008 08:11 PM

Oh my god. What a scene!

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Jun 17 2008 08:12 PM

Castillo dribbles one through the same spot Reyes did. Darling commends Easley for being able to run 180 feet.

batmagadanleadoff
Jun 17 2008 08:13 PM

Castillo in a WWSB sac bunt situation, doesn't bunt. Instead he singles.

+1 for Manuel.

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Jun 17 2008 08:13 PM

And they plugged that hole 10 feet to the right of 2nd for Wright.

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Jun 17 2008 08:16 PM

Jose looked more mad than injured.

soupcan
Jun 17 2008 08:17 PM

Why'd Gary and ron make such a big deal of the Reyes-Manuel thing?

Reyes doesn't want to come out, Manuel wants to play it safe. I'd expect both guys to act exactly the way they did.

metirish
Jun 17 2008 08:17 PM

Manuel in the clubhouse hopefully chewing Reyes out.

batmagadanleadoff
Jun 17 2008 08:18 PM

Mets score a run that wouldn't have scored if Castillo has sac bunted.

The Score: Manuel 2 - WWSB 0

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Jun 17 2008 08:20 PM

Easley misses a ball in the hole.

It might have been too deep for Jose to make the throw, anyway. Damn you Vlad!

Fman99
Jun 17 2008 08:20 PM

Dang. Two ribbies for Hunter and the Mets are down 2-1. I blame Jerry Manuel.

86-Dreamer
Jun 17 2008 08:21 PM

clearly, there is a new sheriff in town. hate that reyes reacted like he did, and god help us if he is injured, but love how manuel handled the situation.

how did garret anderson not score on that play? well, guess it did not matter - 2-1 angels

AG/DC
Jun 17 2008 08:21 PM

Garret Anderson looking slow.

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Jun 17 2008 08:21 PM

Now Hunter gives me 2 fantasy RBI's and makes me sad at the same time.

Oh come on Soupy. Reyes was a belligerent dick in the very first inning of Manuel's very first game. Really interesting test of Manuel's leadership right off the bat.

BTW, fire Warthen.

Delgado a complete disaster in field this year. he needs to slug 500+ to justify fielding this poor. and don't think that is going to happen

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Jun 17 2008 08:24 PM

And Easley doesn't cover 2nd

Fman99

:sigh:

Boneheaded play by Easley/Castillo not covering on a pickoff.

Well, my Gameday still has the Mets leading 1-0 with Torii Hunter still at the plate. He and Santana have been locked in a staring duel for quite some time. Still, that seems better than all the misadventures I keep reading about in this thread.

Very interesting. Considering what happened nearly a year ago in Houston. Though under different circumstances of course.

Easley, SS
Castillo, 2B
Wright, DH
Beltran, CF
Delgado, 1B
Anderson, LF
Tatis, 3B
Schneider, C
Chavez, RF

yikes, willie is probably sitting at home saying "good luck with that lineup Omar!"

wright and beltran have their work cut out for them tonight.

Defense isn't any better under Manuel.
Delgado & Easley not coming off with a shine. Plus if Castillo gives Easley a better feed prior to that they might have had an inning-ending GiDP

Gameday is operating once again. I liked it better when it was locked up.

AG/DC
Jun 17 2008 08:35 PM

Funny that those miscues and tempers of the first inning would be attributed to the "circus" of keeping Willie hanging on if Willie was still hanging on.

Nothing goofier than a media circus ringing their hands over a media circus.

Vince Coleman Firecracker

Keith sounds a little...swishy on the phone. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Fman99

Santana's 2nd inning goes much better than his first.

Poor Mex - doesn't realize that the inning has ended and he's going on and on. Classic.

AG/DC
Jun 17 2008 08:39 PM

I'm getting the Angels feed again.

They're comparing the circle change to the screwball. In movement if not in arm trauma.

Santana looked like a goaltender there.

Fman99

Interesting. Beltran hustling down the line on a routine grounder to second.

I haven't been paying much attention to it but it's a good thing to see.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jun 17 2008 10:00 PM

Really? Cuz they've been playing like lazy shits for most of it. Two guys whiffed on dropped 3rd strikes and haven't tried to run; Castillo was in slow motion on a DP ball and missed a coverage assignment. Easley missed a coverage assignment and his non-pay of a groundball in the first inning, for a single, opened the doors to give the Halos a lead they haven't relinguished.

Two-out threat chases Lackey after 7 2/3. It'll be Castillo vs. Scot Shields if we wanna send up the potential tying run.

Lackey is almost good enough to wear No. 41.

AG/DC
Jun 17 2008 10:14 PM

Reyes would have gotten to that first-innng single, but he wouldn't been able to throw the guy out.

Tying run on deck and name Dabit Wright.

AG/DC
Jun 17 2008 10:28 PM

A run scores as Tatis makes a nice stop followed by a crap throw, setting up Castillo to take a slide that hurts his knee and his wrist.

He stays in, but I expect him to miss 20 games.

AG/DC
Jun 17 2008 10:42 PM

Delgado golfing all. night. long.

AG/DC
Jun 18 2008 05:58 AM

This sucked. All the worst sins of this team before their recent surge were, like magnified.

Delgado played like a sucka. I haven't seen him this detached from his game all year.

I'm with Lunchbucket. That was completely infantile. If Jose plays tonight, I'd bat him ninth. Teach him a little humility.

I didn't see it as belligerence so much as I saw it as a player really not wanting to come out of a game.

Leadership, schmeadership - he did what any of us would do.

How do you suppose Willie would have handled it? The one and only time WWSB ever imposed any discipline on Reyes -- he sat him for 6 innings -- sent him into a 2-month slump and until the end was one of the (unfair) criticisms leveled at him. It's obvious Reyes is a petulant crybaby who demands kid-glove treatment. If he responds well it's very much a test.

Reyes in the papers today reports he apologized to Jerry and his teammates and said all the right things about directing his energies to the game etc etc. We shall see.

I don't know how Willie would've handled it, I don't even really know what happened.

Did Reyes say 'it's no big deal, really Jerry, I can play with this, its nothing.' If that's what happened and Manuel took him out anyway then Reyes' knee-jerk reaction was understandable.

I don't see why or where in a similar situation Randolph would've done anything different.

Reyes not wanting to come out is a good thing.

This whole week is on steroids.

More telling is how this game was an amplified reflection of the Mets of the last year. Scoring early and mailing it in. Head-out-of-the-game plays, lack of hustle, impatient at-bats, everybody looking to someone else to right the ship.

Whining in public and showing up your manager in his first inning is understandable; it's also highly unprofessional.
