It's not often I look forward to IL games but I am looking forward to watching this pitching match up tonight.

Got to say I really like Harold Reynolds on the pre-game , would like to see SNY work him in the booth.

Felix Factz from wikipedia:

Like some other pitchers, Hernández wears a long-sleeved undershirt beneath his uniform jersey. While typically this is done to keep the pitcher's arm from getting chilled, Hernández wears it even in the hottest weather. For him it serves to keep perspiration from running down his arms and interfering with his hand's grip on the baseball.

Hernández has been given the nickname King Felix, a title that matches the moniker of NBA phenom LeBron James. The U.S.S. Mariner weblog invented the nickname in July 2003, when he was just starting out in the minor leagues. Meanwhile, team CEO Howard Lincoln instructed the club's broadcasters to avoid the nickname, to reduce the pressure it might put on Hernández.

Discovery as a prospect
Hernández was first spotted by Luis Fuenmayor, a part-time Mariners scout who saw him pitching at age 14 in a tournament near Maracaibo, Venezuela. Fuenmayor recommended Hernández to fellow scouts Pedro Avila and Emilio Carrasquel, who were impressed with the youngster who could already throw 94 mph. The Mariners continued to follow Hernández for over a year, but baseball rules prohibit teams from signing players to contracts until after they have turned 16.

I like Harold too, I can do without the rubber/plate and a guy in suit thing on
a fake studio field that I find annoying about football pre-games. That whole
little segment there was very ESPNesque.

FUCKIN' HELL, Johan.

Jun 23 2008 05:31 PM

Felix hits a grand slam? Could be a long night.

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 05:32 PM

King Felix comes down from his throne and smites Santana.

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 05:34 PM

Nice play by Castillo.

Let's answer.

Johan, I wouldn't mind you answering in kind.

Wright, some atonement opportunities will be available. Take them.

seawolf17
Jun 23 2008 05:42 PM

Jets center Nick Mangold, Mets fan.

Jun 23 2008 05:49 PM

OK, so I'm sitting here at work, and one the other reporters just yelled, "Hey Dave, how did Johan just give up a grand slam to an American League pitcher?"

I told him, "Don't even joke like that."

Then he said he wasn't.

Dammit.

The hell with that being his first homer. Was that his first-ever hit?

seawolf17
Jun 23 2008 05:54 PM

I think Gary said he was 1-for-8.

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 06:17 PM

King Felix just walked onto the train track.

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 06:19 PM

Asking for one more pitch? Is he crazy?

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 06:21 PM

Not that I think the spiking was intentional (Hernandez dropped his knee down toward the plate), but Beltran better get ready to duck.

metsguyinmichigan
Jun 23 2008 06:21 PM

And so begins the comeback!

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 06:28 PM

I hope so. (The graphic just said the Mets are one of only two teams this season to have no wins after trailing by three or more.) But that's horrible to see a super-talented young pitcher like that go down.

A couple of not so simple twists of fate so far.

Frayed Knot
Jun 23 2008 06:49 PM

I remember Bob Gibson getting injured in a game while base-running. He tried to change direction and collapsed in a heap for the final out of the inning as his leg buckled.

He, like Hernandez, tried taking his warm-ups the next inning and again crumpled like a rag doll on his first try. I think it turned out to be a broken leg (or something equally serious) which caused him to miss a chunk of time afterward and maybe even the balance of the season.

But Bob was not going to go willingly.

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 06:52 PM

Well, he was one strike from qualifying for the win, so I hope his intransigence wasn't about getting himself a stat.

seawolf17
Jun 23 2008 06:55 PM

Randy Myers is in the picnic area! Always liked him.

Wright's numbers don't look too bad because he managing to get his one hit per game and usually an RBI to go with it, but his power for the last month or so is virtually non-existant.

Isolated power numbers:
April: .250
May: .243
June: .063

I mean that's like Luis Castillo slugging.

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 07:00 PM

Randy Myers = Me Sandy Ear

Jun 23 2008 07:01 PM

It wont be so funny when neither Wright or Reyes makes the all star team

This team still sucks

Think I'd rather have Carlos Lopez back and the three pitchers...Oh I forgot Lopez is the goods and will be a yankee in 4 years

Thanks Omar..another winning trade..How's Brian Bannister doing..You had to trade him for a spanish guy that wasn't good enough to make the Royals..

If you're going to pine for players gone away at least get their names right.

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 23 2008 07:04 PM

Who the hell is Carlos Lopez?

And who really cares whether or not Wright and Reyes make the All-Star team?

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 23 2008 07:05 PM

Anyway, if "Lopez" was still a Met, cleon would be whining about how much he sucks, and how stupid Omar was not to trade him for Santana.

Grote15
Jun 23 2008 07:09 PM

YesI keep writing Lopez for Gomez..He is burning it for the twinkies.

Please stop calling me Cleon unless you can prove it..Thanks!

I've already proven it. I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince you, because you know damn well that you're cleon.

Wasn't there a local newsman in NYC here named Rowland Smith?

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 07:23 PM

You really liked that two-period thing when you were calling yourself cleon, as well. Not quite a period, not quite an elipse.

Answering my own question ... it was Roland Smith, not an Australian, no hyphen in his name.

Jun 23 2008 07:36 PM

Reyes reaches. Tying run on double deck.

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 07:39 PM

Castillo almost trying to hit into deeps.

Tying run remains on double deck, in the form of Delgado.

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 07:41 PM

Wright works the walk. Tying run on deck. Save sit now for anybody who comes on for them.

Beltran singles Castillo home. Delgado is up as the tying run.

Arthur Rhodes is still in baseball?

Frayed Knot
Jun 23 2008 07:43 PM

Arthur Rhodes in to face Delgado as tying run.
Isn't he like 106 years old at this point?

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 07:44 PM

If Nixon comes up, do you send Easley up for him?

OE: They already did.

Just when I smell a wiff of hope,...2 Ks and its over.

Phils are phloundering for the 1st time this season and this is the week the Mets have to climb up there. The phightin's won't stay down.
Mets have to get up.
The players have to do the do.

What's the ETA on Church? ON Alou? On Pagan? We needed the calvary tonight.

Gwreck
Jun 23 2008 08:35 PM

Church = this weekend, maybe.

Pagan = Don't count on it. I think he was going to need surgery on the shoulder.

Alou = Maybe after El Duque.

First slam by an AL pitcher since 1971. But he gets hurt playing defense. What kind of 19th century league asks pitchers to play defense?

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 24 2008 08:26 AM

It was also the first home run ever hit by a Seattle Mariners pitcher.
