Even in that super first year, though, you can see scouts moving away from him a bit. He got a ton of hits, but his isolated OBP is .050 and his isolated slugging is .096 --- no eye-poppers there.

No steals, neither.

Then in 1983, he takes the mound, throws five near-perfect innings, but no more. And that's understandable, because by then he was hitting like a pitcher, though only getting 97 plate appearances.

It's funny, sometimes when I look at those old minor league stats, my heart skips a beat and I think, wow, this guy looks like he could be good. And then an instant later I realize that 30 years have passed, the player is around 50, and that I'm not looking at a future star.

What led you to dig up Richard Poe's stats?
