Interim

Two important things to note about Manuel: He takes over a team on a two-game bicoastal winning streak. Heck, if Easley comes through in Game One of the doubleheader, the Mets are on a four-game run. He's an interim manager (fifth in Mets History, I think, after Parker, McMillan, Howard, and Cubbage). Use this thread to speculate about what's next. Yes, I fear that a west-coast change means Gary Carter.

Huh! I interpret "interim" to mean until the end of the year. I guess we'll see if the Mets are about to kick off an in-season search. Maybe they'll clarify at the press conference today. Wouldn't it be just like them to be noncommittal, and leave Manuel stringing along just like Willie was?

Frank Howard took over on June 4th and rode the rest of the way, but that was a team with few illusions of "getting back into it" (as if they were ever in it), and no wild card to stoke those illusions. Don't read ANYTHING into it, but in 1978 Billy Martin got shitcanned, now I don't know off hand if Lemon was enroute, or they just fired Martin without any sort of backup in place (that probably is the best bet) so Dick Howser managed a game for the 1978 Yankees.

Wes Westrum was named interim when he replaced Stengel, it wasn't until after the season that he was named the full time skipper. (headline for an article on him in the 1967 yearbook reads "Interim No Longer") AFAIK he is the only man tabbed interim Met skipper to get the regular nod.

Yes, that's true. I don't know if any of the others were even considered candidates for a full-time designation. (Maybe Frank Howard; I'm not sure. But I don't think so.)

Something makes me think he was, or at least that was a reason why Davey stuck him on the 1984 coaching staff.

The Capital Punisher, I think, was a dark horse, but not a serious candidate. Davey Johnson invited him to be on his staff with deference, suggesting that he understood that Howard might have felt slighted.

No, not yet. They make the playoffs, he gets a 2 year extension and the "interim" tag excised. They don't, all bets are still off.

Well, I'm not betting that way either, but he wouldn't be the first guy upgraded from interim manager to manager in his first year when his team surged into contention.

It's all toast and jam right now, but let the roll continue. In other words, interim is as interim does (in even other words, no, no need to rush).
