Dan Warthen

What do we know about him?

I'd never heard much about him before today. Former pitching coach and bullpen coach for many teams. After looking up his former pitching staffs, none of them really inspire me.

I vaguely remember him as a pitcher.

I believe his name is pronounced War-then, but it would be more fun if it was pronounced Wart-hen.

How would he be categorized , is he a numbers and stats guy , more a nuts and bolts guy . When he walks to the mound will he place his hand on the pitchers shoulder , we shall find out.

The ERA+ of the teams he was pitching coach for:

1992 Mariners 87
1996 Padres 108
1997 Padres 78
1999 Tigers 94
2000 Tigers 99
2001 Tigers 85
2002 Tigers 86

Not sure what this tells us (not enough time to look up more stuff), but my first reaction is "ehh."

In his defense, this may be the best starting rotation he's ever had.

Ed Coleman on Warthen on WFAN:

Known him for a long time, likes him, will do a good job, the young guys - Maine, Pelfrey, Smith know him and are comfortable with him.
