and it's not really close:

Johnson .220/.415/.431/124 OPS+
Jacobs .242/.276/.545/113 OPS+
Teixeira .266/.358/.432/110 OPS+
Howard .221/.319/.486/105 OPS+
Delgado .237/.315/.409/92 OPS+

That's odd. An isolated OBP of .195?

While Jacobs has one of .034?

There's a lot of extreme numbers there for mid-June, it seemes to me.

But we also know Nick can sustain that OBP, if not that isolated OBP.

Of course, he's on the DL.

The problem stat with Johnson is 109 ABs by late June.
Especially when it follows a year where he had 0, which follows a string of years that never topped 500.

Whoops, forgot about that. He just got his cast off, though... umm...
Okay here it is by VORP, WARP3, and THT's Win Shares:

Johnson 8.1 VORP/ 2.6 WARP3/ 6 WS
Jacobs 10.0 VORP/ 2.7 WARP3/ 6 WS
Teixeira 11.0 VORP/ 5 WARP3/ 7 WS
Howard 8.6 VORP/ 3.9 WARP3/ 9 WS
Delgado 3.1 VORP/ 3.1 WARP3/ 4 WS

Well, that negates the reason I made this post in the first place. So, on further review, the Best First Baseman in the NL East is obviously, umm...
...this guy?

or this guy?

or maybe even this guy?

Well, certainly not this guy:

Does WS include defense? I imagine that if it does not, then Teixeira would move further off the top of the list.

Yes, it does. Here's the page explaining the Hardball Times' methodology.

Not really. It's clearly Teixiera at this point, but Delgado might be #2:

Name BA/OBP/SLG/OPS+/VORP/WARP3/Win Shares

Teixiera .271/.373/.484/128/22.8/6.8/11
Delgado .254/.334/.467/113/14.1/5.2/9
Howard .234/.324/.508/112/14.9/4.7/12
Jacobs .242/.280/.502/104/8.8/2.8/8

Let's have some Metly fun and run this comparison over the last month of the season -- The Post-Willie era. An everyday first baseman playing one month of baseball with an all-star break mixed in will almost accumulate the 109 at-bats that Nick Johnson amassed for the entire season when you crowned Nick on your first go-through.

Delgado
BA/OBP/SLG .293/.377/.636
AB/BB 99/12
HR/RBI 9/23
RC/RC27 21.9/7.88

Howard
BA/OBP/SLG .272/.337/.565
AB/BB 92/9
HR/RBI 9/22
RC/RC27 16.3/6.3

Teixeira
BA/OBP/SLG .278/.418/.646
AB/BB 79/19
HR/RBI 7/19
RC/RC27 20.8/9.7

Jacobs
BA/OBP/SLG .253/.298/.418
AB/BB 79/5
HR/RBI 3/9
RC/RC27 9.3/4.4

Young
BA/OBP/SLG .299/.427/.433
AB/BB 67/15
HR/RBI 2/3
RC/RC27 12.5/6.77

In 14 games in July, Delgado is hitting .396, slugging .736, and on-basing .476. He has 4 homers, 6 doubles, and 10 rbi. And none of this includes his big game on June 27 at Yankee Stadium.

He's been a big part of the Mets resurgence.

NOW can we cut him?

Perhaps he wasn't a Willie Guy.

I can't get over how this team has changed under Jerry. And how bad they are making Willie look now that he's gone.

Jerry's gone 18-9. It's unreal.

Like his Mets, Carlos Delgado has surprisingly edged into the lead here, and has a chance to put some distance betweeen himself and the field.
