Reasons why he got voted most overrated. 1 - Jeets is so good looking. 2 - Jeets is on track for the HOF 3 - Jeets is the Captain 4 - Jeets is so good looking.

These lists are pretty silly. All the guys at the top of the list are from either NYC or Boston meaning that the voters are reacting to the pub the national media gives to those 3 teams.

I can't stand the sight of the guy as much as the next anti-Yank fan, but if anyone goes and looks at the ten years of good numbers here, good numbers there, in the post season, I think a lot of it is sour grapes. Part of the reason I can't stand the sight of him is 'cause he was always there. Our team wasn't. If a Met did that for ten years, say David Wright for example, we'd be ga ga.

he IS overrated though. he gets talked about as if he was one of the top players in the game and he's just not. oh and lets cut the "clutch" nonsense. his postseason OPS is the same as his regular season OPS. if "clutch" means "comes through in the playoffs the exact same percentage of the time that he does in the regular season" then he's "clutch," otherwise he's not. oh and some more "clutch" jeter numbers: -his OPS with RISP is lower than his oberall OPS (though not by much) -his OPS, particularly SLG%, takes a nice dip in close/late situations -his OPS is about 90 points lower against "arch rival" Boston.

Great. He'll take it out on us next week. It's taken me 13 seasons to grudgingly grumble that yeah, very fine player and all, but can "he has four rings!" be dropped from the case for his defense, as in "how can they say that, he has four rings!"? Not that he doesn't have them, not that they aren't superb marks of accomplishment for him and his teammates from those particular squads, but it reflects stuff he did between 8 and 12 years ago. If you're rating him based on 1996 to 2000 now, then, yeah, you are overrating him if that's your criteria.

This was a player poll (about 2/3 responding) so they're reacting to perceived publicity of what theose NYC & Boston players get over and above what they think is accorded similar players in smaller markets. As far as fans go, clearly what's most annoying about Jeter isn't Jeter himself but the hordes of Jeter-ites and mostly their tendancy to think that all arguments as to his greatness can be boiled down to three inane statements: 1) He's Clutch! Specifics are discussed above as they have been forever here and elsewhere. But the real annoyance about the 'clutch' argument is that it's used as a catch-all. A Jeter-ite will trot out his stats until counter stats are offered at which point he'll fall back on; 'Jeter transends stats' 2) He's the Captain! What the fuck does that mean? A Captain in baseball is like being Mother Superior at the Pentagon; iow, it's irrelevent. They could name him Field Marshall and it wouldn't change the fact that it's nothing more than a symbolic title that carries no weight beyond their own inner-fiefdom and I'm not all that sure it means much there either. 3) Four Rings! Do I even have to?

It's not so much that he is over-rated than he is "over-beatified". That said, can you imagine if he ever became a Met through some bizarre set of circumstances and then pulled an Alomar? Given that he is who he is, I really believe that he would be assassinated by someone.

Derek Jeter is Paul Molitor if Moly played his most of his career in a big market, and on a successful team for a more prolonged period of time, and wasn't often injured (which probably was a big factor in the decline of Harvey's Wall Bangers).

HA! Yeah, yeah, I was just going to only go with the market size and the fact that for a good chunk of Molitor's career with the Brewers they weren't anywhere near what they were during that small couple of years run during the early 1980s. Then I noticed that Molitor missed A LOT of games right in the middle of his career, and figured a stat head here would use that for a "don't even THINK of insulting Paul Molitor by comparing Jeter to him" kind of response.

Some people may (erroneously) define "overrated" as "people I'm sick of hearing about." That's the only definition I can think of under which Alex Rodriguez would fit the description.
