Eight-year-old Eddie Richardson knows all 750 Major League players.

Well, 749.

Autism?

I know old time fans love saying about the old 8 team leagues that they "knew everybody" but really, would an old Dodger fan know some 23rd-25th guy on the Reds or Phillies roster?

Either autism or a kid with genious like tendancies.

Not all savants are autistic-savants. There aren't a lot of autistic eight-year-olds who would let a stranger touch them. More obviously, his folks would know by the time he's eight that he is autistic, and that would be part of the story.

I'm sure if I was eight, with the down time and the lack of competing intellectual demands, and put my mind to it over the summer, I could come close to pulling if off. The problem is that by the time I remembered the last roster, several others would have changed, and I'd go mad keeping up with the transactions.

Buit, among uniform numbers, positions, and baseball cards, there's enough cross-referencing in your mental databse that it's do-able.

i once upon a time (i was probably 13 or so) could have told you most or all of the NBA rosters... today i couldn't name the entire knicks roster without cheating.
