It's been decidedly convenient that Philly has decided to to lose 5 in a row.

It's obvious from those standings that the season is o-v-a. Philadelphia is running away with it. The pathetic Mets who constantly give up or don't even try to play and certainly don't have any HEARD have no chance of overcoming 3.5 games with 3.5 months to play.

I haven't heard optimism out of you in a long time. I like it.

What is HEARD? I need to stop in more often.

That's HEART.

Damn. A fine parody of the reactionary alarmists (or is it alarmist reactionaries?) ruined by a typo.

WTF is 'NGB'? Net Games Back? What does that mean and how is it calculated?

AG/DC
Jun 23 2008 07:51 AM

Actually something I came up with.

If you're in third, five games out of first and three out of second, you're eight net games back. I think it's a better indicator of a team's actual position. A team five games back in second is in much better shape than a team five games back in fourth.

As soon as you pass a team in the standings, they stop being your enemy and become your ally.

soupcan
Jun 23 2008 07:52 AM

Ah. So its more a measure of how many teams are in front of you.

Not bad.

I'm sorry Willets...I honestly thought it meant something and I just didn't know what.

And Colorado comes back from 5-4 in the bottom of the eleventh to beat Florida 6-5.

I'm worried it's Church that makes us a .500+ team. without church, we're sub 500.

or at least that's been the correlation so far.

In the two weeks I was on holiday I saw only a few innings of Mets baseball , the opening Monday night in St. Louis was an espn game , looks like things are shaping up or are the Phillies gone bad?

TransMonk
Jul 09 2008 11:26 AM

Philly is 9-16 since June 10th while the Mets are 16-11...so a little of both.

Mets have been mashing so far in July going 6-2 with 102 hits and 57 runs in those 8 games.

Frayed Knot
Jul 09 2008 12:21 PM

Funny part about Philly is that (aside from the late innings Monday night) it's their offense that has disappeared.
They got shutout again last night.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 10 2008 06:41 PM

The Mets, at the moment, are only three games behind Milwaukee in the Wild Card race.

I know the conventional wisdom is that the NL Card will come out of the Central, but it won't necessarily happen that way. The Wild Card is a possible alternative path to the playoffs for the Mets.

Winning the division would certainly be more satisfying, though. Especially if it keeps Philadelphia out of the postseason.

AG/DC
Jul 10 2008 07:08 PM

Teams with alternative paths to the playoffs don't grow beards in September, show up at the park at 10:30 AM for night games, and bear down with ferocity.

Goals are:

1) Catch Phillie
2) Pass Phillie
3) Run away

Make the Wild Card a moot point. Fine anybody who mentions it. Serious.

worry about the WC if the division gets out of reach, theres no sense looking at plan B when plan A is still looking good

This current winning streak, though one short of tying for the record, ties a record for the longest winning streak in terms of calendar days (thanks to the All-Star Break). It has stretched over 13 days, just like the Mets streak of 11 straight from May 28, 1969 to June 10, 1969. I forget how that team finished, but I think they had a pretty good year.

If they win tonight, we will have gone a full two weeks without experiencing a Met loss.

AG/DC
Jul 18 2008 11:36 AM

If only Wagner and Wright could say the same.

Not that I'm greedy.

Centerfield
Jul 18 2008 12:33 PM

If we get to the point where the outcome of Tuesday's game is relevant to us, it will already have been a pretty good season.

Frayed Knot
Jul 21 2008 11:02 AM

Marlins have one leftover game with the Braves tonight while the Phils & Mets rest before their 3-game matchup.
A Fish win tonight would make it an exact three-way tie for NLEast supremacy.

So, what we have to do with run away with it, then give me a heart attack by collapsing, and then run away with it again.

Florida still has 6 with the Mets and 6 with the Phils, so phinished may be a little strong...but definitely phading.

Yeah, kind of. I went apeshit after you offended me three times with bad intent, not humorously, including apologizing to an uninvolved poster and insulting me gratuitously in that post as well. I went apeshit after you went apeshit three times.

Mets are now 81-63, Phillies are 79-66, 2.5 games behind.

Mets have 18 to go, Phillies have 17.

If the Mets go 10-8 (.556) the rest of the way, which seems quite doable, the Phillies have to go 12-5 (.706) to tie, 13-4 (.765) to win the division.

If the Mets go 11-7 (.611) the Phillies need 13-4 to tie, 14-3 (.824) to win the division.
