In the tradition of ex-frontmen being judged on their solo output, I bring you Ian Hunter. He also stands beside T-Rex as a guy whose songs are often better known through later covers.

Staving off Metly blues, please tell me which Ian Hunter song you'll put on your last mix tape?

1) "Cleveland Rocks"

2) "Just Another Night"

3) "Once Bitten, Twice Shy"

4) "Central Park N' West" (amazingly, I couldn't find anything but a brief audio clip at Amazon.

5) "Ships" (This is better known by the Barry Manilow cover, but I figured, if you really had this tape on a desert island, you might want a song about ships.)

I really like Ian Hunter. Hard to separate him from Mott stuff, but it's "Once Bitten" for me. His 2001 "Rant" CD is dynamite. Great stuff.

The song rocks, and helps me picture the "Drop Dead" NYC of the seventies. Question is, what's with the "n"? The place is called "Central Park West." It's not an intersection. At least, it's not any intersection that I know.

Plus he kind of describes this scumbalaya downtown existence he's living that's hardly characteristic of Park West, even in the seventies, I think.
