Bon Voyage

Not sure where to put this, but I'm hitting the road for two months, travelling to the South Pacific-- Hawaii, Tahiti, Tonga and New Caledonia--as part of my job.

Sucks to be away from my wife and kids for that long, but there's worse places in the world to be. I hope to return to find the Mets in first place, but I suspect they are what they are-- and so, unfortunately, are the Phillies.

See you in late August. LGM!!

Wow. Aloha to you. Scout some talent while you're out there.

What are you studying? Ethnology?

History. Most of my students are prepping for careers in the merchant marine-- this is all hands-on training for them.

You can follow my Pacific wanderings: www.csum.edu and click "follow the voyage"

No internet connectivity-- sporadic e-mail. Perhaps from an internet cafe in Papeete, Nuku'alofa or Noumea. (and yes, I named those ports to make you all jealous).

Or did some NFL organization send him there to scout defensive line prospects?

Damn, I was feeling pretty punk about getting my students into the press box at a Grand Rapids Griffins hockey game. A massive cruise? WOW.

Enjoy, and be careful!

Well, I'm back...60 days at sea.

From Hawaii to New Caledonia (ridiculously over-priced and filthy) to Tonga (incredible) and Tahiti (ridiculously over-priced and beautiful).

A pitcher of beer in New Caledonia: $37

So...what'd I miss?

I always thought that Tahiti sounded like the coolest place in the world.

Black haired girls with red flower printed sarongs doing belly dances all day long and drinking red punch.

Is that what it was?

When you left, the Mets were in 4th place. Now they're in 1st!

Plus, they've perfected the catastrophic loss.

Seeing how they performed in my absence, perhaps I should enlist!

The trip was fantastic-- lots of work (of the 60 days, only 18 were in port), and hard to be apart from the family for so long, but an experience of a lifetime, nonetheless.

Tahiti is transcendent--but getting more and more crowded by the day. I was there ten years ago, and the place is hardly recognizable.

Tonga-- while off thebeaten path-- is far and away the friendliest place I've ever been to. Strangers welcoming you into their house for lunch (after I stopped one and asked for directions to a restaurant). We were there just before the coronation of their new king (they are the only remaining monarchy in the Pacific) and it was sublime. The entire country closes down on Sunday, however, so when booking your next family vacation, remember that!

Good to be back-- I have a lot of catching up to do.

King George Tupou, given two coronations, one a polynesian affair that includes slautering pigs, the other a Wester-influenced rite --- crown, sceptre, ermine cape, the whole bit.

What does a Tongonese need with ermine?
