It will be a while, if ever, before I can stop associating Joel Piniero with this game that came in the midst of the Collapse:

http://ultimatemets.com/gamedetail.php?gameno=7391

This will be only the second time the Mets ever face him.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

Looks about as shitty as the first time around so far.

Pedro looks like crap again.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 02 2008 06:37 PM

He should do us a favor and retire already. Thanks for 2005, Pedro. We couldn't have finished 3rd without you.

SteveJRogers
Jul 02 2008 06:37 PM

Not a good showing for Pedro at all. Homer to Glaus.

Is anyone warming up yet?

themetfairy
Jul 02 2008 06:37 PM

4-0 Cardinals with only a third of an inning under Pedro's belt.

This is fugly.

"Without Pedro we wouldn't have had Beltran!"

Sorry, had to drag out that old chestnut of a party line!

TransMonk
Jul 02 2008 06:52 PM

I hat baseball. This team is worthless.

Pedro won't retire...he'll sign as a retread with an AL team next year and finish 3rd in the Cy Young voting while leading them to a championship.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 02 2008 06:53 PM

I'm wondering how much longer they can keep him in the rotation.

And if he's NOT in the rotation, what do you do with him?

It's not beyond imagining that the Mets might cut Pedro loose before the season ends.

Nymr83
Jul 02 2008 07:11 PM

bad job by Church with 2nd and 3rd not at least getting the run on 3rd home.

how far the mighty have fallen, delgado being pitched to by a righty with 2nd and 3rd 2 outs and a guy like Easley on deck.

Nymr83
Jul 02 2008 07:15 PM

Easley brings home 2 runs, and the Mets are within 1

themetfairy
Jul 02 2008 07:16 PM

Easley gets some Schaefer tonight.

themetfairy
Jul 02 2008 07:21 PM

Suddenly we have a rain delay in the bottom of the 3rd.

Nymr83
Jul 02 2008 07:23 PM

friggin rain

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 02 2008 07:24 PM

That was a weird inning with plenty of bad stuff (Chavez FP, Church K) interspersed with heroics (Reyes leadoff 1B, Beltran's sexy 2B, Delgado's enormous walk and Easley's ballsy hit).

Sidney Ponson's magic is ova.

AG/DC
Jul 02 2008 08:09 PM

Fuck it. I'm sticking with Pedro.

Elster88
Jul 02 2008 08:15 PM

Can someone teach Reyes how to run the bases?

Or how about the game of baseball in general?

AG/DC
Jul 02 2008 08:15 PM

Nidnick should have let that one drop it and held Reyes to a double.

Jose, meanwhile was watching that so closely that he was practically taking movies.

Wha'happened?

I forgot about the game and just turned back.

Nymr83
Jul 02 2008 08:28 PM

Lets see Martinez get the job done and not give any runs up now that his teammates have picked him up and tied this game at 4.

All right don't tell me -- see if I give a fuck

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 02 2008 08:38 PM

I mised it too, but here's what it says:

- P. Martinez grounded out to second
- J. Reyes tripled to deep right center
- E. Chavez flied out to left, J. Reyes scored on left fielder S. Schumaker's throwing error
- D. Wright singled to right
- C. Beltran grounded out to first

That's strange. Did Reyes tag foolishly and score on a bad throw?

AG/DC
Jul 02 2008 08:45 PM

Reyes tagged and broke on a shallow fly to draw a throw.

The throw was airmailed and Reyes scored.

Meanwhile, Rick Ankiel just hit a ball 423 roids and the Mets trail by one.

I liked Jason LaRue better when he played the leatherboy biker in the Village People. In fact, I liked the Village People better then, also.

Frayed Knot
Jul 02 2008 08:58 PM

So what's with all the, 'Reyes needs to learn to run the bases' comments?
Did he initially loaf on the triple?

metsguyinmichigan
Jul 02 2008 09:19 PM

Church just hit a single to move Wright over. I really missed Church.

Gwreck
Jul 02 2008 09:19 PM

Maybe he watched the flight of the ball just a touch.

He might have been able to score on the play, maybe, if he ran hard the entire way and was waved in.

Gwreck
Jul 02 2008 09:20 PM

Wild pitch = good.

C'mon Delgado.

metsguyinmichigan
Jul 02 2008 09:21 PM

Man on third with just one out? We gotta get him home.

AG/DC
Jul 02 2008 09:21 PM

Small single there was as big a moment for Delgado as any against the Yankees.

Tie game with runner on third and one gone.

themetfairy
Jul 02 2008 09:23 PM

The Mets take the lead on a sac fly!

metsguyinmichigan
Jul 02 2008 09:23 PM

Keep'em coming.

Speaking of the games against the vile MFYs, Easley's leap to snare the liner late in the game Saturday was as good as any catch I've ever seen in person.

Let's keep the offense moving!

AG/DC
Jul 02 2008 09:23 PM

Sac fly and it's 6-5.

Keep hitting. There're nine more outs to get and no guarantees in the pen.

Frayed Knot
Jul 02 2008 09:24 PM

Surprising that Ankiel didn't run Schumaker off the play and take that flyball as he had a much better chance at getting the runner.
But I'll take it.

Now let's kick the shit out of this Springer P.O.S.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

Very nice. We were down by 4 in this game and I was begging Pedro to retire.

Hi. I'm back after watching my son's summer league team lose to fall to a record of 0-10-2.

If Cardinals fans are so "great" (as in "the greatest fans in baseball"), how do they tolerate announcers like Mike Shannon and these losers I'm hearing on FSN Midwest?

I've been especially down on the Mets the last two nights, ready to write off the season in fact, and it seems to be working.

More specifically, Pedro and Anderson have both sucked this year.

AG/DC
Jul 02 2008 09:41 PM

Fifteen pitches, two righties due up, and blowing the fastball by Ankiel. I'd wamt him back out there no matter who is available.

What's the deal with Sanchez?

Frayed Knot
Jul 02 2008 09:42 PM

Duaner was telling anyone who asked that he can pitch tonight, but both Manual and Warthen were saying probably not.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 02 2008 09:44 PM

Triple for Wright.

You know, he's better than Skip Shumaker or Ryan Ludwick.

Elster88
Jul 02 2008 09:44 PM

Young David paused, took three or four walking steps, and then took off. Coulda saved himself a belly-flop by busting it out of the box.

Elster88
Jul 02 2008 09:46 PM

Does Beltran need a rest? They say he's getting tomorrow off. I was skeptical with Wright being "tired", but it seemed to work.

Carlos takes strike three against a Cardinal. We didn't need to see that ever again.

AG/DC

Beltran is the diference keeping us from breaking this open.

I'm OK with a rest for him.

Heilman's given up one run in a month. He just got out the heart of the order 1-2-3. One pitch gets away from him and he's pulled. My first beef with Manuel.

Lunchbucket - "How many fucking home runs was that tonight? 5?"

That's only the fourth home run of the night for the Cardinals. Glaus has 2, Ankile and Duncan each have one. If they get to keep facing our pen, they'll likely get a fifth one.*

This game is a lot less fun suddenly.

*Upon edit: It's late, I'm tired and frustrated. The Cardinals won't need a 5th home run, since Glaus's shot was a walk off game winner. Another gut wrenching loss.

Tell me Gameday had a typo and Muniz wasn't really in there.

We already used Smith.
We already used Feliciano.
Sanchez unavailable.

Would you have used Schoeneweis instead?

metsguyinmichigan
Jul 02 2008 11:09 PM

Absolutely horrible.

To have them battle back from 4-0 and 5-4 and have the bullpen piss it away is just unacceptable.

That game reminds me of everything we saw from mid-September on.

thats what happens when the SP lasts only 5 innings, though with the rain delay that may have been for reasons other than effectiveness. and give pedro a little bit of credit for mostly settling down (a solo shot was the only run off him after the first)

No, most of what we've seen from September on is not battling back from 4-0, or getting three early runs and letting the opposition back in the game.

It's not unacceptable except in the context of every loss being unacceptable, which is a position I can respect. Though absolutely horrible, to me, is more like a 9-0 loss to Sidney Ponson and the Yankees.

The offense showed up two games in a row, which is rare enough, against a top team. We could have easily had three more runs if Beltran hadn't been playing like a sucka. (I think he gave his uniform to his younger brother and let him play last night.) I can build on a game like this.

I absolutely thought that when it happened last night.

What a shitty way for a game to end. One strike from extra frames.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 03 2008 07:11 AM

I watched the last three innings on TiVo-delay this morning before heading in to work.

Was very surprised to see Muniz given the ninth inning, especially with Pujols, Ankiel, and Glaus due up.

When he got the first two out, including a heart-in-the-mouth warning track catch by Beltran on Ankiel's drive, I was thinking he was actually going to get through it.

I guess not.

Even though two of the three hitters were righties, I might have gone with a more experienced Schoeneweis. But instead, even though it wasn't a "save situation" I might more likely have gone with Wagner. There probably wouldn't have been a more dire situation later in the game. Those were three tough hitters.

AG/DC
Jul 03 2008 09:41 AM

Fuck saves. In a game tied in the ninth I go with my top releiver every time unless there's a left-right mismatch or sometihng. And he better be prepared to pitch the tenth also.

Armando would.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 03 2008 09:52 AM

Maybe not EVERY time. (Like if there are three soft hitters due up.)

But with Pujols, Ankiel and Glaus?

That was more of a Wagner spot than a Muniz spot.

This is the first Jerry Manuel decision that I strongly disagree with.

That's what I was thinking. We lost the game with our best late-innings pitcher on the bench while sending a rookie out to pitch to the heart of their order.

AG/DC
Jul 03 2008 10:14 AM

Nuts, isn't it? And Randolph said he had some kind of understanding with Wagner that he'd only get save situations.

Tear that shit up, Jerry.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 03 2008 10:19 AM

The real failure was Feliciano. He has been the most atrocious reliever I've ever seen with a sub-3 ERA.

AG/DC
Jul 03 2008 10:25 AM

Could you imagine Davey Johnson going through an extra inning marathon with McDowell or Orosco kept out of the game until he burned through Sisk and Gorman?

This is why I'm ready to argue that middle relievers are often more valuable than closers. At least they're pitching when the team needs them, save situation or not.

AG/DC
Jul 03 2008 10:52 AM

Well, some managers bring their top reliever into tie games.
