I came up with an interesting little question this morning and posted it elsewhere. However, the folks over at that place would rather gang up and bully some newbie with insults and marvel at their own self-professed magnificance rather than talk baseball today.

I like Sheets. He doesn't walk anyone, he's got a career 11-3 K/BB ratio, and a career 115 ERA+. If Citi Field plays like Shea does, his extreme fly ball rate would be a big asset. He's like a better version of John Maine.

I have my doubts that the Mets will go after Sabathia one year after giving Santana a seven-year contract, but who knows? If they go with an internal option at first base to replace Delgado then maybe they'll be willing to spring for another very expensive long-term pitcher.

Sabathia - 5 years / 90 million( won't get it done)

Agreed. Sheets is playing his way out of Milwaukee's payroll this year.

Yeah that would seem to be the reservation with Sheets , he' snot pitched 200+ innings since 2004 when he made 34 starts , which was the last time he made anything close to 30 starts.

those guys are fine, but i'd rather see the mets pursue a big-bopper at 1B or a corner outfield spot, because that is the team's biggest need.

I'm not too put off by Sheets' injury history. I think he's a pretty good bet to pitch 150 innings a season for the next 4 years. And yes, I'd like to see the Mets land a big time bat for first base or left field, but seeing as nearly ALL their upper-level prospects project as either first basemen or left fielders and the HUGE drop off after Teixiera (Pat Burrell? Juan Rivera? Adam Dunn? umm, The Thong?), I think the team may be leaning towards filling those positions from within.

I meant that as one of the six choices to fill the two spots with.

if the mariners go on a fire sale, do we go after bedard? it's losing more prospects, but they're supposedly going to get pennies on the dollar considering how he's pitched this year (so far).

Seattle gave up a king's ransom for Bedard; I think they'd like a similar package if they were to trade him. Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman and Kameron Mickolio would be roughly the equivalent of, I don't know; Fernando Martinez, John Niese, Eddie Kunz and, let's say, Dylan Owen? Woof. After that trade, the team might be better off buying some independent league teams up to replace its farm system.

I don't think we have enough good prospects to deal for Bedard. Since he's still got another year, I have to think the M's won't sell low right now (unless the new GM is even dumber than the old one). It would make far more sense for them to wait until he's had a run of ace-caliber starts, because then they might actually get back most of what they paid.

if I'm the Mariners i keep him, they could always get a good return next season, or failig that get a 1st rounder and a supplemental pick when he signs elsewhere, not a bad option sometimes.
none of those guys are highly rated enough that i'd hesitate for evena second to bring in Teiziera or Dunn. It does thin out after that as far as i know. Oh, and I love Sheets, he's been on my fantasy team many times, and he's a walking injury ward.

I'm for advocating for this year.

No, I definitely agree. If they can sign Teixiera, they need to do it even if it means Carp and Davis and Murphy and Duda and Martinez and Evans all have to fight over the LF spot. As for Dunn, I know he's a great hitter, and I'd LOVE to have someone with a .384 OBP and .491 SLG on this team, but if he was batting below .230 in mid June I think New York would eat him alive. There are so many loud, stupid voices in the New York media that would never be able to see his value and would constantly be calling him soft and whatnot. I wish he could work out well here, but I don't see it. This town barely tolerates Beltran, who has a lot more "visible" value (stolen bases, batting average, freaking RBI, etc) than Dunn would.

Don't underestimate Burrell either, I can see him fitting in nicely in the 5 hole behind Beltran.
