MFYs @ Shea, 1998-2008

From the folks who brought you the ultrapopular non-New York opponent Interleague Shea retrospective, here's the local flavor. Eleven years of trauma, some of it less traumatic than the rest. I'll leave out the pre-Subway Series Mayor's Trophy and such for lack of solid research, but I'll leave in everything else that was standout good and completely forget all that sucked.

In a class by itself:

• The Matt Franco Game, 7/10/99
--Mets 9 Yankees 8...that was the chant I threw at anybody who mentioned rings right after.

In a class by itself because, sadly, it was the only one of its kind that month:

• Shea's last home World Series win, 10/24/00
--With the stars Rick Reed, Robin Ventura, Benny Agbayani, John Franco and Armando Benitez. Yes, there could be another World Series at Shea and maybe even a Mets win...but I don't really believe that.

And all the rest, in no particular order:

• Most wonderfully Kooky, 5/21/05
--Dae-Sung Koo doubles off of Randy Johnson, makes it home on a sac bunt to first. You are with us, Mr. Koo. Bonus track is Kris Benson's very solid outing, remembered here because Anna bylined a piece in the Post the next day about how her man was getting a special treat as a result of his pitching. Oh Anna, we completely knew ye.

• Rocket burns up the first time, 7/9/99
--Piazza owned him from the get-go, recalled here with utter fondness.

• Estes and the Assmiss, 6/15/02
--Shawn homering off Roger should have been triumphant. Somehow, of course, it wasn't.

• Eff Unit, 5/19/06
--The most-oft used bit of footage in the history of SNY is David Wright hopping, skipping and jumping after belting Mariano Rivera. I was doing the same earlier when Carlos Beltran lashed out at Randy Johnson.

• Rescue Me, 5/21/06
--One day after the most famous Billy Wagner meltdown of them all, Wright and Delgado homer lengthily and Mets take the series, leaving all of us relieved...and bitter that we didn't sweep.

• Blown Away It's Not Blown, 5/19/07
--In which the Mets build a big lead and the MFYs chisel away at it, but not nearly enough, though who could tell for sure? My friend and I literally held onto each other when the last out was made, as if to say, no, they can't take this win away from us.

• Son of Kurt Russell's Nephew, 7/3/04
--What could be better than Mets 9 Yankees 8? Nothing, actually, but Mets 10 Yankees 9, also won in the ninth, came pretty close.

• We All Need a Broom of Our Own, 7/4/04
--Mets sweep Yankees. Need more info?

• The Midnight Ride of Mike Piazza, 6/17/01
--Mets rally from six down in a game several Mets fans I know went to sleep on because we were so far back and it was so darn late. The decisive smack was delivered by our catcher off Carlos Almanzar, but he wouldn't have come up had not Tsuyoshi Shinjo sacrificed his quad in beating out a potential double play ball at first. And it wouldn't register in the memory banks if not for Armando managing to keep Bernie Williams' massive home run to right just foul.

• Don't Say Mo Vaughn Never Did Anything For You, 6/16/02
--He just fucking blasted David Wells to secure the series win, which was nice of him...y'know?

• Yes, We Won, 6/28/98
--The first-ever Mets win in this painful ongoing drama came when some combination of Carlos Baerga, Brian McRae and Luis Lopez executed a sac fly that almost wasn't. For a moment, ESPN credited the Mets with the winning run, then took it off, then acted confused, then went to SportsCenter. To this day, the final score as it appeared on the broadcast was a tie. But I'm pretty sure we prevailed.

• Ollie's Big Moment, 6/29/08
--What a way to finish up the Shea chapter of this rivalry! (One can always hope.)

I was at The Midnight Ride of Mike Piazza. I didn't have a voice for days afterwards <g>

Hopefully Ollie's game today will be an Instant Mets Classic (the way the Friday afternoon game was).

The Mets finish up 16-17 against the Yankees at Shea, and 13-20 at MFYS II

8-7 at MFYS II since 2004. We were just getting the hang of that dump, too!
