A Call to Armas

Sounds like he will start tomorrow night's game in St. Looie, then hang around filling Vargas' former role as Muniz goes down again. This is unofficial but expected at this point.

I'm all excited about this Stl Louis series. I hope we kill them.

He'd give you a nice little old-school string of 32-33-34-35-36 on the pitching staff.

He's earned his spot start, putting up good numbers in Nawlins...

You're dressing Armas in 36? He was 44 in spring training. Muniz is 32, so the string would break on one end or the other.

Armas was 36 with with the Expos and the Ex-Expos. I don't know what he wore with the Pirates.

There was probably never a higher string of three than 59-60-61 last year, but it didn't help us any.

That's stretching it a little, as Mota's suspension wasn't over at the time of Chan Ho's one-and-only start.

How ignorant of me.

Between you and me is a digital divide.

If we call him up just for the one game and then send him down right afterward we can label the thread 'A Farewell to Armas'

Or, if he gets pulled over and harassed by the cops, we can title a thread "Armas and the Man," but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Vargas, by the way, has cleared waivers according to CBSsportsline

From the Andy Phillips thread:

]We're taking him for his knowledge of the MFY playbook and will abandon him Monday after using him for all he was worth...goodness we are evil when our hand is forced.

Sometimes you go for snark and you come up with accuracy! Phillips was DFA'd after Monday's game to make room for Armas. Muniz lives.

Nicely done G-Fafif. I thought that you were going for the funny but that's as good an explanation as anything else for some of the roster moves. Let's hope that tonight's game doesn't go into extras because the Mets will be only be playing with 4 bench players.

Mets.com has TA in 44, famously traded for NYM 45 Pedro Martinez long ago and first pitcher to wear Bob Myrick's old digits since Izzy in 1999 (so says the source). The last start taken by an NYM 44 was in fact Isringhausen's in St. Louis nine years ago, a steamy Saturday (both here and there) when Iz' needed to be bailed out early and took the loss, future NYM 36 Manny Aybar holding on for the win after future NYM 27 Darren Oliver couldn't go five. From there on out, Bobby V would generally use Izzy in innocuous situations as it was believed or understood or declared that he couldn't handle the pressure. Wasn't sad to see him go to Oakland...for Billy Taylor?

And of course who's your longtime Cardinal closer now? (Injury notwithstanding.)

Bonus noodnik fact: The last time a pitcher wore 44 at Shea for the Mets in game action, he did so as an emissary of the Mercury Mets, July 27, 1999. The pitcher? Jason Isringsofsaturn.

I don't know. I bet a lot of Orioles and A's and Red Sox and Yankees have had kids.

I know, you're thinking, "Yankees?" But it's true.
