Let's play THE FAMILY FEUD!

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 01 2008 11:02 AM

I'm working at home today, and my son is watching an old Family Feud rerun on the Game Show Network. (It's from the original run, featuring Richard Dawson as host.)

The question: Name something to do when you're bored at work.

Today, of course, the overwhelming answer would be "surf the Internet" but this is 1970-something, and the Internet was something that only about five people knew about.

So this question serves as a bit of a time capsule, or a history lesson. A look at how our forefathers goofed off.

I didn't note the numbers, but I do have the answers in order.

Can you, you denizen of the 21st Century, guess the six ways people used to goof off in the office thirty years ago?

Well my answer before the internet would probably be dialing 976-1313, but I'll guess the survey would support Garbage Pail Basketball.

We'll keep playing, though.

Ooh, I though we had to let all five family members go.

I was totally going to say that.

Sex in the broom closet was gonna be my next guess.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 01 2008 02:22 PM

Now, thanks to the Internet, you can have virtual sex in the broom closet at work, or you can watch someone else doing it.

Next time I'm in the office, I'll have to ask around to find out where the broom closet is. You know, just in case I get bored.

My kids have watched reruns of the show during the season it was hosted by Richard Karn ("Al" from "Home Improvement"), and it freaked them out how much he looks like me.

http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0439781/

A man walks down the street,
He says, Why am I soft in the middle now?
Why am I soft in the middle?
The rest of my life is so hard!
I need a photo-opportunity,
I want a shot at redemption!
Don't want to end up a cartoon,
In a cartoon graveyard .....

Bonedigger, Bonedigger,
Dogs in the moonlight.
Far away, my well-lit door.
Mr. Beerbelly, Beerbelly,
Get these mutts away from me!
You know, I don't find this stuff amusing anymore ....

If you'll be my bodyguard,
I can be your long lost pal!
I can call you Betty,
And Betty, when you call me,
You can call me Al!

A man walks down the street,
He says, Why am I short of attention?
Got a short little span of attention,
And whoa, my nights are so long!
Where's my wife and family?
What if I die here?
Who'll be my role-model?
Now that my role-model is ....
Gone ...... gone,
He ducked back down the alley,
With some roly-poly, little bat-faced girl.
All along .... along ....
There were incidents and accidents,
There were hints and allegations .....

If you'll be my bodyguard,
I can be your long lost pal!
I can call you Betty,
And Betty, when you call me,
You can call me Al!
Call me Al ......

Instrumental

A man walks down the street,
It's a street in a strange world.
Maybe it's the Third World.
Maybe it's his first time around.
He doesn't speak the language,
He holds no currency.
He is a foreign man,
He is surrounded by the sound, sound ....
Cattle in the marketplace.
Scatterlings and orphanages.
He looks around, around .....
He sees angels in the architecture,
Spinning in infinity,
He says, Amen! and Hallelujah!

If you'll be my bodyguard,
I can be your long lost pal!
I can call you Betty,
And Betty, when you call me,
You can call me Al!
You can call me Al ......
