Carp.
Reyes walks, moves over on a Chavez dribbleOut and then steals 3rd.

But both Wright (to 2nd) and Beltran (to right) strand him with weak pop outs.

Zvon
Jul 04 2008 05:17 PM

Werth batting lead-off.
I didn't see that coming.

And he leads off the game with a single to left off a good pitch that might not have even been a strike. A nice low and outside change up.

Zvon
Jul 04 2008 05:26 PM

Santana gets out of is despite a boot by Delgado that could have cost the Mets a run.
Nice play by Santana covering first, so they got the out and there's no error on that play, but we should have had the lead runner.

Werth ends up stranded on third as Howard grounds out hard to the mound.
:)

Mets have the black road jerseys on and, correct me if I'm wrong, caps that are not black, but a real dark shade of blue.

Oh, so do the Phils.
Must be a July 4th thing.

Thought maybe it was my picture, lol.

I want one a those caps.
They look kool.

According to the Phillies broadcast, Happ is from the Peru/Spring Valley area of Illinois, which is where my maternal grandparents lived while I was growing up.

On any other day I'd be rooting for a good day from him.

Also according to the Phils broadcast, the caps are part of Fred Wilpon's idea to raise money for returning veterans.

I would love a dominant outing by Santana.

I want to know how these players get new caps to look just like long-worn caps. All of Santana's caps look like a bubble on his head.

Zvon
Jul 04 2008 05:41 PM

lol.
Santanas does look like it was put thru the wash.

Its raining now, and pretty hard.

No score after 2 and a half.

The "Stars and Stripes" cap for today's games (and the games on 9/11):

Tough spot- pitcher up, bases loaded. Do you root for the strikeout or hope for the seeing eye ground ball?

The first of July being, of course, the day Canadians stood up valiantly and politely asked Britain for permission to secede, if it wouldn't be too much trouble.

That spastic half swing he took?
In those situations I just cross my fingers and pray.

Mets score as Reyes beats out the DP grounder!

Reyes hits a weak grounder, but avoids the DP and drives in a run.

Considering that Wright started out with an 0-2 count, I'm thankful for the RBI walk.

The rookie pitcher is out - we get to the Phillies pen early in the night and in the series.

I think that was mighty nice of the Phils phans, who are not known for their niceyness.
And the kids folks were sitting right there so that really was nice they gave it up for the kid.
What did it hurt to do that?

Tip a the cap to the Phils phans.

There's no blue on those Blue Jay caps, probably because there's no blue on the Canadian flag. Even though there's blue on a blue jay. And blue is the main Blue Jay uni color. The Blue Jays wear special uniforms on Canada Day featuring red as the primary and dominant color.

Not a great inning for Aguila in left. He double clutched on that throw and still sent it way up the first base line.

Phils get one back on a Howard RBI single.
AND THEY TIE IT ON A BURRELL RIBINGLE!

GAH!

Both with 2 out.

Lets get out of it now!

The other night the Missus started a song. She called me in and asked me to finish it. But baby, I thought, the Mets-Yankees are on.

But creativity comes first, and we wrote a really nice song. I wiped my brow, turned the internet back on, and found that the Yankees had destroyed the Mets.

Now I just went into the living room to do our annual duet of Dave Alvin/X's "Fourth of July.

We sang beautifully (I'm serious), but it was 2-0 when I went in, and 2-2 when I came back.

The message would seem to be that the Mets hate music. But that's crazy. What's makes more sense is that they hate my music.

No.
That was from last years Mr. Met Guy comic.
I keep that shelved cause I think It may have jinxed the Mets at that time.

It did take 4 minutes to add the lightning and get it supported at photobucket.
Which by todays standards is sloooooow.

Endy gets the first hit in 4 innings - but Castro's 4th inning 2B is still the last ball we hit out of the infield.

Zvon
Jul 04 2008 07:09 PM

Chavez leads off the 8th with an infield single.

I thought Harry said "Rollins slid and stumbled on the damn grass".

He said "damp grass".

Zvon
Jul 04 2008 07:17 PM

Beltran and Delgado strand Chavez at 2nd.
Not good.

Frayed Knot
Jul 04 2008 07:19 PM

This'll most likely be Santana's last inning (due up 4th in top 9) so he better make it a good one.

Zvon
Jul 04 2008 07:21 PM

Looks like when Santana serves up that change the Phils are consciously slowing down their swing to try and stay back on it.

Surprising to me, cuz when I checked the three batters for the inning I had visions of Castro KaBOOMin one.

Eww, that was one sorry half of the 9th.

Sanchez to pitch the 9th.

Frayed Knot
Jul 04 2008 07:32 PM

These games are tough to win on the road.
Once you don't score in the top half of the inning you know you have to: Hold them - score - then hold them again.
If you're at home all you have to do is score.

It's mentally draining.

Zvon
Jul 04 2008 07:34 PM

And we are having Sanchez bat 9th and leading off next inning?
Not Schneider?

AG/DC
Jul 04 2008 07:34 PM

Good K of Howard.

I kind of grow tired of his holding his hand up to the ump for thirty seconds while he stands like a statue. Then he calls time every third pitch. Quick pitch that shit.

AG/DC
Jul 04 2008 07:36 PM

Good K of Burrell.

I kind of grow tired of his... well, his beating the shit out of my favorite team.

I assume Schneider is hitting 9th (ergo: leadoff) and the pitcher in the 8-slot, but no one has said.

He don't like being used more than one.
And that was the only assured one inning gig (if it went extras) since we slid Schneider in the 8th slot.

Both the Phils booth and CBS Sportline had Sanchez in the 9th slot.

Zvon

Not a good way to start this series.
15 left on base, 5 by Beltran.

Any special reason you won't update the Wright avatar Edgy?

bmfc1
Jul 04 2008 07:59 PM

I'm getting mighty sick of Beltran. If he takes ball four earlier in the game w/the bases loaded, maybe it's a different game.

I would have walked Victorino for Coste and said so at the time, but not here. I also wouldn't have PH for Castro, even though a righty was in. Jerry had a lousy night. He won't enjoy the post-game press conference.

Zvon
Jul 04 2008 08:06 PM

I don't like what I'm seeing during Beltrans at bats either, tho I have to admit I don't see as large a sample as some of you guys.
I see him taking some really nice pitches to hit.
Many as 3rd strikes.

Well, I'll take the blame for this one because I may have jinxed the Mets yet again when I posted the doctored panel from the Big Met Guy comic.

I'm so superstitious I'm actually gonna remove that from the thread.

I knew they were doomed to blow it when they made F.U. Happ look like S. F. Koufax. This was a complete mismatch and they fucked it up. And fuck Johan and Sanchez too for not sacking up and getting the third out when they needed it. Aararaararahhadhrrggh

I have to say after seeing Sanchez dispatch the 1st two batters that last inning I thought we were goin extra's for sure. Duaner looked to have some nice stuff
Even after the double I was thinking extras.
But I would not have wanted to pitch to Victorino.
Coste has had some big hits here and there and is batting over .300 in his part time role, but you can't let Victorino beat you there.

Bad loss.

That's the winning run out there on second, you can't get beat that way. You've got to go for the right-right or left-left matchup and go one batter deeper into the order. I know Coste is hitting well this year, but...

... fuck, why bother? I have Wagner out there anyhow.
