Redman wasn't fooling anyone that inning. Reyes' line out was a shot also.

Hopefully the Mets will keep pounding the ball.

Saw the end of that Phils game today.
When I tuned in it was 2-2 in the 8th and Im thinkin: yes, Phils can lose and Mets can take 1st tonight.

Then WHAMBAMtyMAM, it was 6-2.
Like they were waiting for me to tune in before exploding.
Darn Phils.

Even if we should lose tonight, Im really amazed and happy where we are here at the break.

Joe Morgan believes that this week's All Star Game will be the most exciting in the last 20 years. Why? Because it will be played in Yankee Stadium.

So why'dja stop at 20 years, Joe?

Greatest venue ever? Did he really say that? Amazing.

Curse me for saying this, but I'm almost hoping for a rain-out. Imagine the weeping?

His comment seemed like a make-up under orders from ESPN brass after his statement, discussed earlier tonight, that the A-S game isn't as exciting as it used to be because the players don't play for more than two innings.

I'm telling ya, rain! Lots of it. "Greatest game ever" washed away.

Would serve 'em right.

Got my program in the mail yesterday. Usually there is a token home team story. This, however, is virtually all MFY. It went on the shelf with the others. I might never look at it again. Gag.

Y'know what Reyes [u:3c8dc4b9c2]doesn't[/u:3c8dc4b9c2] do that kind of bugs me?

... when he has the next base made easily (like on the Evans bingle to RCF) he doesn't go at that base agressively so as to put pressure on the defense.
Getting to 3rd with a some intent to it sticks the idea in the defense's head that they might get burned by another base unless they get teh ball back in quickly and without a bobble or a mis-throw.
By cruising in like he does he lets them off the hook and kills his chances of taking advantage if they ever do screw up.

Most of the time it won't matter but it bugs me anyway.

A lot of letters on the Rockies roster: Koshansky, Podsednik, Quintanilla, Tulowitzki, Torrealba. (How's that for great baseball analysis? It's my first IGT in a week so I'm rusty.)

Not sure. So says Noble.

NEW YORK -- The notion of Johan Santana pitching in relief had some appeal. It was a possiblity -- that the Mets' primary starting pitcher would pitch in relief Sunday -- manager Jerry Manuel and new pitching coach Dan Warthen said after Santana had pitched merely five innings in his start against the Giants on Wednesday night.

It made sense. Santana hardly had extended himself against the Giants; moreover, Warthen had said he didn't want Mike Pelfrey, the Mets' starter in their final game before the All-Star break, to throw more than 100 pitches on Sunday against the Rockies.

Warthen told Santana of the possibility. And Santana embraced it.

"See if he wants to be the closer tomorrow," Billy Wagner said on Saturday. "I'll start my break a day early."

But by game time Saturday, Warthen had become dissuaded.

"Our bullpen is in pretty good shape," he said. "We can back up Pelfrey and let Johan get his rest so he can come back strong."

Santana is to start the Mets' game in Cincinnati on Thursday.

But the early departure of Pedro Martinez on Saturday -- he pitched four innings -- increased the workload for the bullpen. Carlos Muniz, Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis and Wagner combined to pitch five innings. And before Saturday, Duaner Sanchez had appeared in three straight games for the second time in eight days.

Perhaps there will be need for an extra arm in the 'pen on Sunday night.

"I'll do whatever they want," Santana said as he left Shea on Saturday.

Chances are, he won't be used. But it hardly would set a precedent if he were. Santana regularly pitched in relief in his first four seasons with the Twins, and former Mets manager Gil Hodges thought nothing of using Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman in relief in games preceding the All-Star break.

We haven't seen any Nick Evans power yet - all his ML hits have been to opposite field IIRC - but the minor league stats* and the rep says he has some.
Be a nice spot for it.

Seems like Easley's been in on at least half the plays in this game - both offensively and defensively.
He's either turning two; breaking up two; legging it out so THEY can't turn two and thus being on for Delgado's blast; or just by fielding a ton of grounders.

Nymr83
Jul 13 2008 08:08 PM

i'm not against using starters in relief when it helps the team, but in a 7-0 game it would be pretty foolish to put Santana on the mound, it would be like putting your starting position players into the game in a blowout instead of taking them out of it.

True, I just like to see what they did back in the 70s, when Seaver or Koosman or Matlack would come in during the final game before the break.

Gwreck

Listened to the WFAN broadcast for most of the game while coming home on the LIRR.

I could definitely detect a true excitement in Howie's voice, talking about how Delgado's homer reminded him of Strawberry, or how the last 9-game winning streak for the Mets was in 2000 -- the last year the Mets won the pennant, of course.

As referenced by Edgy, he had a great story about Jane Jarvis playing her entire repertoire (including Christmas songs) during the in-game blackout that happened 31 years ago tonight.
