7 walks and a hbp to 46 batters isn't good,

I think I'm reading about BABiP way too much. The notion that it's a factor beyond a pitcher's control is still one I don't buy.

Well, if it were much higher he wouldn't be employed anymore; but in the bigger picture, I'm not sure if it's a BABiP issue -- considering guys hit only 260 against him overall.

i would expect pitcher A's babip to conform to pitcher A's historical babip, even if i were to reject the notion that babip will regress to a league average i think feliciano has been unlucky with leadoff singles this year

I don't think it's entirely beyond a pitcher's control, but there is an element of randomness involved in getting hits (particularly singles), plus the defense behind you plays a role. One factor I'd like to see get more attention in this regard is the isolated power (slugging-BA) that batters have against a pitcher. As a measure of extra-base hits, that should tell you how hard he's being hit, and that's a factor of BABIP that a pitcher generally does control.

for those balls in play, is he getting a lot of ground balls that are finding holes, fly balls that outfielders aren't catching up to, or are they line drives?

But that's the whole point. He's brought in to face specific batters, so these are situations in which he's meant to succeed.

This would be a good time to improve these figures, doncha think?

Gameday shows Howard standing out there in the batter's box, getting soaked while everyone else has left the field. Advantage Feliciano, I think.
