... again - although it can be backdated several days (Friday?)

Nothing specific "wrong", just feeling out of sorts.

Nick Evans back up.

Also Alou to play at AA tonight (in Norwich, Conn)

Good night nurse!

If the Mets win anything this year it will be a bigger miracle than 1969.

The Post is already pounding the drum for Barry Bonds. This will just make it louder.

Omar really does have to make a trade for a real outfielder.

Or they can bring up Wilmer Flores and put him in right field. He can't be any worse than what they have now!

Forecast for Norwich tonight: 20% chance of precipitation, stray thunderstorm possible.

Obviously Alou's out for another three weeks.

This of course raises the question of Nick Evans' number. He was a 6, and could technically still receive it with Trot Nixon on the DL. Instead, we may see something exciting.

12? (Willie?)
16? (Pagan?)
22? (Valentin?)
43?

"He can't be any worse than what they have now!"

This is the new nickname for any corner outfielder between the ages of 16 and 39.

They should tweak Gary Carter's nose and give Nick Evans number 8.

Every Tom, Dick, and Harry (and Fernando) gets number 17. Carter's number shouldn't get any honors that Keith's doesn't.

But what a slap at Desi Relaford.

Or teenaged shortstop.

Pascucci might be tempted to ask for his release, except (1) goodness, he's already been released once this year, and (2) he makes his home in Baton Rouge.

Understatement: This must really suck for Ryan Church. I wonder how much of the "migraine" was him telling himself his career isn't in jeopardy. Odd we never heard about the migraines before, even amid all the talk of his head. Hope he recovers for on and off field purposes.

Why are they wasting the 3 ABs he will get before his next DL stint in the minor leagues?

How much if any are Mets management culpable in this , seems it was mis-handled from the start, sad for Church and I hope he can make a full recovery. I'm not counting on him for this season.

This would obviously be a huge blow to the Mets. Church pro-rated, is having about as good a season as David Wright. I don't see the likelihood of Church's fill-ins matching those numbers.

Mishandled, yes, but it's impossible to know how much it's impacted him.

The Old Original JB knows far more than me, but post-concussion syndrome is a hard and nebulous thing to read and understand. I'm hoping whatever the level of the Mets mishandling, it's primary effect has been more on the team and not on Church himself.

I'll cut them some slack. It's not like they were hiding the x-rays from anyone and putting Church out there knowing he wasn't ready.

Everything I've read tells me they were following the (bad) advice they were given.

I'm optimistic - in a positive way - that Church will be back in two weeks and pick up where he left off.

Good point and Church himself seemed more than eager to play .

Well, Carter's got that Hall of Fame thing working for him. Personally, I'd rather not see 17 handed out so much. But I know others here disagree.

I think it's pretty uniformly wrong to give a guy's digit away when he's on the DL.

On the other hand, I think Evans should have retained rights to it while he remained on the forty-man roster. Marlon Anderson and Willie Collazo deserve that same right. I think 40-man guys need to play and live in the notion that there is a uniofrm with their name and number waiting for them at Shea if they can just get their shit a little more together.

Nothing more discouraging than knowing that, while you're technically on the brink of the bigs, you're totally not a consideration in Charlie Samuels' mind.

Maybe Nixon doesn't want #6 anymore. Or Nixon OK'd the uniform switcheroo. I don't know one way or the other. Yet. I'm just theorizing here.

And I'm soapboxing, so theorize away.

Nixon in his comments to the News the other day certainly seemed beyond the giving a rat's ass what number he wore.

Blasphemy!

Nixon to me comes off like a guy who knows all too well his career is hanging by a thread, and that there's only so much he can do about it. His body language says as much.

AG/DC
Jul 09 2008 10:45 AM

That's why we need policies and standards, to protect the numerical meaning, rights, and needs of guys without the career juice to push their own interests.

Nixon is not a crook.

And what if that thread just happened to be stitched inside of that #6 uni?
