The starting lineup is being assembled for the food that will be offered at Citi Field, the Mets’ new stadium, which is scheduled to open next spring. The management of the Mets and Aramark, the Philadelphia food service company that is in charge of food in the stadium, have confirmed that Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group will open a Blue Smoke barbecue restaurant; a Shake Shack stand; Pop Fries, serving Belgian-style hand-cut fries; and a taqueria. Mr. Meyer will also run a high-end restaurant, cafe, bar and lounge complex behind home plate called the Sterling Club.

“I’ve known Danny a long time and he’s tops in what he does,” said Jeff Wilpon, an owner of the Mets. “He also loves the Mets.”

Mr. Wilpon said that the team management and Aramark are negotiating with other well-known New York restaurateurs to open elsewhere in the stadium. “We will have locations at every level,” he said. Some of them, like a restaurant in the Ebbets Club, will be run by Aramark.

I'll take your word on that Jeffy.

Joking aside it will be nice to actually go to a Mets game and hopefully get some decent grub.(at high end prices)

About 3-4 years ago a friend of mine who was a commercial photographer ('portraits a specialty'), was looking to get out of that business and into the food service/restaurant industry.

On a lark he emailed Danny Meyer to ask him what advice, if any, he could offer.

Meyer emailed him back and suggested they meet over lunch at The Gramercy Tavern (one of his restaurants).

They met, had lunch and spoke for about two hours. According to my friend, the guy could not have been nicer and more encouraging.

My friend has since gone on to become a sommelier and is working on opening a wine and cheese shop in the Catskills where he now lives.

I just thought that for a busy, successful guy like Meyer to take time out of his day like that to chat with someone he didn't know who was just looking for some guidance was great.

When I went to Shea a couple weeks ago, I ordered a thing of Nathan's fries, a back of Cracker Jack and a large Diet Pepsi. Price: $15.

I ate them very slowly.

The Shake Shack is indeed excellent. It is, I believe, the only place in the entire 5 boroughs where one can get an authentic Chicago Hot Dog.

Another Danny Meyer story:

A friend of mine had a friend who worked at Union Square Cafe. He (my friend) was going to Rome and she suggested that he come by the USC to ask Danny where he should go to eat. Danny gave him the name of several places and told him to tell the proprietor that he was a friend of Danny's. My friend told me that he never ate so well, that all of the proprietors of these places would comp him dishes and put big chunks of truffles on his plate so that he could tell Danny that they had treated him well.

I've never heard of Danny Meyer until today, but from now on, wherever I go, I'm going to tell people that I'm his friend.
