Luis Castillo's Pipp Flexor

Rockin' Doc

The way Easley has been tearing it up of late, Castillo may have difficulty getting back into the line up upon his return. With Church and Alou both out, the Mets need all the offense they can find. There is still a week left on Castillo's 15 day DL, but I'm not sure the Mets can afford to take Easley's bat out of the line up when Castillo rejoins the team.

As long as Easley stays hot, I say ride him as far as you can and use Castillo as a late inning defensive sub.

Agreed.
Manuel says contract $$ don't matter to him and he will play the hot hand.
Guess we'll see if thats the truth.

btw, Cancel is up and Aguila down, yet A Reyes retains No. 4. Anyone see what Cancel was wearing tonite?

Mets.com lists both of them as wearing Number 4.

Glimpse of him in pen appeared to reveal No. 40.

Yeah, because the Wilpons are just going to eat three years and $20 million. What planet do you live on?

He disappeared for a while but now he's back full throttle. Calls in to every show, every day or so. He's a trip.

Nasty Nasty....So they trade him for a bag of balls..same thing...I'd still be surprised if he plays ANY role on the 2008-2009 Mets team.

Just my opinion..

Cleon may be on to something, according to Adam Rubin...

Mets aren't rushing to get Luis Castillo back into the lineup

The Mets plan to give Luis Castillo the Orlando Hernandez treatment. In essence: Don't rush, we're doing fine.

Castillo, in the first season of a four-year, $25 million contract, and on the DL with a strained left hip flexor, is eligible to be activated Friday in Cincinnati, the day after the Mets return from the All-Star break. But with Damion Easley and rookie Argenis Reyes performing well as a tandem at the position, one Met official, when asked whether Castillo would rejoin the team during the Reds series, replied, "What for?"

Said interim manager Jerry Manuel, who has shown a preference for playing performers over players with large contracts: "We're really playing well at that position right now. That's a tough one. I need the break to think about that."

With the Mets minus Castillo, Easley (0-for-4 Sunday night) has started all but two games this month. But at 38 years old, he's been susceptible to injury, including quadriceps trouble that has nagged him since the July 1-3 series in St. Louis when he took over.

Manuel has raved about Reyes' range, and sees him as a run-producing sparkplug in the David Eckstein mold. Reyes, 25, is a slap hitter who hasn't hit more than three homers in any professional season.

So Argenis Reyes is a younger, healthier, and cheaper version of Castillo.

And if that's true, then that's a good thing to have. (An Utley or an Uggla would be better, of course, but not many teams have second basemen like those.)

The Mets don't necessarily benefit from the "cheaper" because they're paying Castillo anyway. And with three years left on his contract, Castillo would be very difficult to unload to another team.

So what happens? Is he an expensive reserve infielder behind Easley and then A. Reyes until he gets released some time during the 2011 season? Or will there be some kind of a perfect storm that will cause there to be some team that has a need at second at a time when Castillo is the best guy available?

(This is all going under the assumption that Castillo won't get his regular job back. I think he will, but probably not through the end of 2011.)

seawolf17
Jul 14 2008 12:55 PM

I can't see how he's a reserve infielder, because he only plays second base. He's not exactly a super utility guy. When he's back, he plays.

And I don't know if that's a bad thing; I know his injuries don't exactly make him the most reliable option, but when he's on, he's pretty good. I know we all want Ryne Sandberg, but realistically, Castillo's not a terrible guy to have in your lineup.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 14 2008 01:02 PM

No, he's not. I think he should play until he's replaced by someone younger and better.

But if it turns out that Argenis Reyes is that guy, (and it's way too early to say that for sure) then that day will come well before Castillo's contract runs out.

I wish the Mets could trade him to the Mets as only the Mets seem gullible enough to take on his stupid contract.

How unhappy are the Yankees with Robinson Cano?

I guess they'd have to be really unhappy to trade with the Mets.

You can have a one- position backup guy as long as the guy he's backing up (Easley) is versatile.

That's not ideal, but over the shorthaul, it can work.

Haven't heard much about Castillo's progress for quite a while. His 15 days on the DL were up on July 18th. The Mets are obviously in no hurry to get him bach since Easley and A. Reyes have done so well in his absence.

Castillo has 3 years remaining at $ 6 Mil. per season left on his contract. I doubt that the Mets plan on eating his contract and they likely can't trade it away unless they get extremely lucky. So what have they been doing with him. Is he rehabbing in the minors somewhere?

Nymr83
Aug 03 2008 01:35 PM

teach him to play the outfield and he may just find his way into that sad rotation out there.

Trading him along with money is the obvious one.

Burdensome contracts the Mets were able to move:

Rey Ordoņez
Roger Cedeño
Roberto Alomar
Rey Sanchez

In the meantime, I'm not about letting go of anybody.

Which means he had better change his name to Ruis Castillo if they're going to move him.

Which, even if he changes his name, isn't happening.

I wasn't advocating releasing Castillo and eating his contract. I was wondering whart have the Mets done with him. He was placed on the 15 day DL on July 3rd. I was just wondering what the Mets had done with him. I assumed that he was playing in the minors as part of a rehab assignemnt. It was just odd to me that I had not heard or read anything about him and his progress.

Upon Edit: A brief search of the web turned up that Castillo played second base for the GCL Mets on August 1st. He was 0-2 with a walk. It will be interesting what the Mets plans are for him.

He started playing rehab games a day or two ago - they're talking about a week until ready to return.

I just want to throw out there that, even in his erratic and injury-hampered season, Luis Castillo hasn't been outplayed by Argenis Reyes. Reyes production has been unexpected (as his presence has) but hasn't been enough to play anybody off the roster.

OPS+:

Easley 91
Castillo 88
Reyes 85

OPS+ as secondbasemen and compared to secondbasemen only:

Easley 105
Castillo 89
Reyes 71

So what do you do with Castillo in the offseason? Do you keep him, or do you find a taker and go after Hudson or Ellis in the free agent market?
