Anybody who had given up on Easley and would've been fine to release him this year, get your hands up. Way up so we can see 'em.

Always quick with the Met pom-poms, huh Edgy?

No. Don't know what you mean. Thanks for trying to emasculate me, though.

where are the "pom poms"? he's pointing out that many on this board wrote Easley off before he got hot.

Steve isn't the first who wanted to see me in my cheerleader uniform.

I should start the Delgado thread.

I guess there were some but I don't know why. He had some big hits last year and was really productive until that ugly ankle injury.

One hot streak does not make everyone who wrote him off as being wrong. And Edgy does tend to be one of those "cheer loudly and proudly even when the team is horrid" types that likes to prove how "right" they were when things turn around.

Hey..thats me. Thats what they call "a fan".

But if/when the team does turn it around doesn't that mean that person was right?

steve is just a bitter yankee fan in 3rd place trying to make met fans feel bad

Yeah but it means you are not being a realist when it comes to the fortunes of your team.

No it means that every once in a while a blind acorn finds the nut. If a team or a player stinks and someone keeps banging the drums by saying "no, its NOT a slump" despite no logical evidence to the contrary, then yeah that does not make the person right.

where do i find a sighted acorn?
|
soupcan Jul 13 2008 08:08 PM |
But if the guy/team come out of the slump and goes on to be productive then that person was right.

Steve, for your own sake, get sober. For my sake, shut up.

One good thing about the mini-resurgence from Delgado is that Joe Badabingo "boldly" bet so heavily against it.
|
AG/DC Jul 13 2008 08:37 PM |
Steve, I take back the "shut up" part. Sorry.

Realistically, if that was the case I would not be saying they are not horrid. I'd still be loudly and proudly cheering them. Positively for the most part. They are my team come what may. Ive been a Met fan for a loooong looong time Steve, and I have suffered thru many horrid teams and seasons. So it goes. If they are wearing a Met uniform, I'm cheering em on. Might feel the need to boo here and there. Even that I'll do proudly. I love a winning team but thats not the reason I am a Met fan. Needing your team to win is a Yankee fan mindset. I just ask my team to play the game.

Zvon - I love you, man!

Steve, you're supposed to root for your team through good times and bad. That's what being a fan is. The way you're advocating is the way of the Yankee Fan.

Hands up on Easley and Delgado, but this is the old "you're never as good as you are when you're winning, and you're never as bad as you are when you're losing" thing.
|

Hand way up on Delgado, not so much Easley; although I didn't think either of them would ever be playing like this again. Delgado's on pace to repeat his 2007 performance, but a league-wide downturn in offense transforms his .330 OBP/.450 SLG from a 103 OPS+ to a 107. On top of that, we can reasonably expect his results to improve in the second half: his 22.1% line drive rate (his highest since 2005) has only resulted in a .271 BABiP, with Lady Luck taking away about 7% of his hits. While he'll never have another year like 2000 again (not many will), he could easily wind up with a year like 1996 or 97, which is more than was I hoping for in spring training.

I'mnot saying Easley is generally as good as he's been the last two (or three??) weeks, only that releasing him would have most likely kept us from enjoying what goodness there was. On Delgado, I always felt he'd be pretty much as good as last year, health permitting. Yeah, he's in decline, but he took two steps backward last year, so I thought a year stabilizing his decline was most likely.
|
Frayed Knot Jul 14 2008 06:49 AM |
And my only point in bringing Delgado up wasn't to 'out' those who trashed him before but merely to show how the 'addition-by-subtraction' route usually isn't as obvious as it sometimes seems and that the answer to the question; 'Can we do any worse?' is quite often, "Yes".
