Can't Believe I Found This

Many of you know that my stepfather was the sculptor Harvey Fite, the creator of Opus 40, and that I live on the site of this sculptural masterpiece and take care of it. This week, I discovered an old metal box containing something I never knew existed...that no one knew existed. Harvey's memoirs. Typed, single-spaced, a lot of hand corrections. I can't tell you how long, or what period in his life they go up to, because I am only taking a few pages out of the box at a time to scan them, and reading as I copy edit what I scan. I'm up to 1917 now, still in his Texas boyhood. I can't begin to tell you how excited I am about this.

That's VERY cool. I'd love to find something like that. Where was this metal box? In some forgotten corner of your property, or have you been propping your feet up on it for the last twenty years?

Closer to the second. I knew there was a box that I had mislaid, but I had no idea this was in it. I found it under a bunch of stuff behind a couch in the living room, where it had probably been for at least the last 15 years.

I've scanned and proofread seven chapters. He's still in Texas, in his senior year in high school. It's 1921. It's fascinating so far. I'm not reading ahead -- partly out of a not-so-superstitious fear of taking more pages out of the box than I can scan at one time. When it's done...Opus 40 will self-publish it, and we'll sell it here. Then I'll look for a real publisher and wider distribution.
