IGT - Mets v. Reds (Santana v. Cueto 7/17)

Centerfield
Jul 17 2008 11:27 AM

I feel like it's been a year since our last game. How much longer until first pitch?

Santana (8-7, 2.84 ERA) versus CIN: Cueto (7-9, 4.67 ERA).

Schedule says Philly is off tonight, meaning a win puts us in a first place tie.

It occurs to me that I know nothing about my enemy.

Benjamin Grimm

Phillies resume tomorrow with a series against the Marlins.

It would be nice if they could both lose all three games, but I'm not sure that's possible.

Although I don't want to see the Marlins win three games in a row, we've got to root for them over the Phillies, who are a greater threat to our playoff hopes.

Santana gives it right back-to-back.

Is it just my imagination (running away with me) or does Santana seem have a bunch of these "give back" innings this year?
Y'know, the kind where he allows them to score immediately after being given a lead.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 17 2008 06:42 PM

Well, that was probably Santana's worst inning as a Met.

Let's hope they can overcome this. They have some doin' to do.

It sure seems that way with Johan , it's like I was not surprised to see him cough it back up.

Cueto's doing some coughing too.

Mets quickly get 2 back, now trail 5-4.

Geez, Delgado is killing the ball. Just a single, and prolly shoulda been an out, but he hit it pretty darn hard.

By my math, and this is just me pulling numbers while watching the game - so unofficial, Johan has gone to the mound in 31 innings where the Mets have scored runs in the previous half inning. He has allowed runs in 13 of those 31 innings:

March 31st vs. Marlins - Mets score 6 in the top of the 4th, Santana gives up 2 in the bottom of the 4th

April 12th vs. Brewers - Mets score 2 in the bottom of the 1st, Santana gives up 1 in the top of the 2nd

April 18th vs. Philly - Mets score 3 in the top of the 8th, Santana gives up 3 in the bottom of the 8th

May 4th vs. Arizona - Mets score 1 in the top of the 4th, Santana gives up 1 in the bottom of the 4th

May 10th vs. Reds = Mets score 3 in the bottom of the 3rd, Santana gives up 1 in the top of the 4th & Mets score 2 in the bottom of the 5th, Santana gives up 2 in the top of the 6th

May 17th vs. the Yankees - Mets score 2 in the top of the 7th, Santana gives up 1 in the bottom of the 7th

May 22nd vs. Braves - Mets score 2 in the top of the 2nd, Santana gives up 1 in the bottom of the 2nd

May 27th vs. Marlins - Mets score 3 in the bottom of the 1st, Santana gives up 1 in the top of the 2nd & Mets score 1 in the bottom of the 5th, Santana gives up 1 in the top of the 6th

June 6th vs. San Diego - Mets score 1 in the top of the 6th, Santana gives up 2 in the bottom of the 6th

June 17th vs. Angels - Mets score 1 in the top of the 1st, Santana gives up 3 in the bottom of the 1st

July 17th vs. Reds - Mets score 2 in the top of the 4th, Santana gives up 5 in the bottom of the 4th

The Mets scored 29 runs in the above instances and Johan gave 24 back the very next half inning.

Run support my ass.

**These were not necessarily situations where the Mets took the lead, only when they scored.

It was a stressful HR -- opposite field and looked until the very end that Griffey might catch it. Instead it hit a fat guy in a blue shirt in the first row.

Frayed Knot
Jul 17 2008 08:40 PM

A younger Griff might have climbed that wall and snagged it.
