F-Mart to Shea?

Normally I stay away from the New York rags as the condescencion and negativism is too much for me. But someone's blog pointed me to this link from the Snooze which has an interesting little tidbit in there.

]Minaya suggested Church's diagnosis lessens the pressure to pursue an outfielder via trade. The Mets also should get Angel Pagan (shoulder) back Thursday, when the second half of the season opens in Cincinnati. And team brass doesn't seem averse to promoting 19-year-old prospect Fernando Martinez during the second half.

"That's still the feeling," Minaya said about filling the Mets' void from within.

I'm not averse with them bringing him up at some point, to add to the mix, but not now, and since Pagan and Church will soon return (and cancel each other out theologically, I don't see room opening up soon.

Septemer is fine. August if there's another pinch? Sure, I guess.

The thing about Church is... just because we have a diagnosis that says that his headaches aren't concussion-related (and I'm dubious that such a disconnection can be made with absolute certainty), doesn't mean Church can't still continue to be knocked from the lineup by the migraines, by effects of post-concussion syndrome, or both.

If they are disconnected, good for him. But for the team, it means he may have two chronic problems.

I'm looking forward to getting Angel Pagan back for the outfield rotation. He should add improved outfield defense and bench strength. Hopefully, Church will be back and adding some offensive firepower to the line up in the near future. If Church and Pagan are able to join Endy Chavis in the outfield and Tatis continues to be surprisingly effective, then I see no need to rush Fernando Martinez. The four of them should be able to cover the two corner outfield positions adequately with Beltran anchoring them in centerfield.

I'm all for letting Fernando Martinez keep playing regularly in the minors, rather than sit on the bench at Shea most of the time. Maybe, move him up to the Zephyrs later in the season and then give him a serious look next spring to see if he is ready to contribute to the Mets.

Since there was talk about season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder, I'm not sure the defense is going to be all there. I wouldn't be that surprised to see endy replacing him late in games.

It's possible that the reporter/blogger was the one who made the actual suggestion and Minaya just failed to correct him.

But if Omar did suggest this then I'm distraught.

Weird story in the Snooze this morning about dsagreements and confusion over the severity of pagan's injury.

They say its a torn labrum, which would prevent him from switch-hitting but leave him some usefulness, but less, so surgery and starting over next year is an option.

I think that's what it said anyway.

Yeah, Pagan is coming back from surgery, but the fact that it took him this long to recover is a bad sign. If it indeed is a torn labrum, that's no fun. I just had surgery last summer for that, and before I got surgery, it definitely limited my range of motion on my arm. Supposedly, rehab can help, but as we saw, it was long, and it isn't 100%.

and speaking of the F-Mart...

Kieth Law on F-mart in the futures game:

]Fernando Martinez, OF, New York Mets: No one from either squad looked better in BP than Martinez, who put one in the third deck in right, another off the facing of the second deck and a third to dead center. He lets the ball travel and commits late to swinging, which he can do because of his plus bat speed. He only had two at-bats, because just one of the five World Team outfielders, the overmatched Gorkys Hernandez, played the full nine innings.

It'd be sort of ridiculous to call him up that quickly, especially with the injury trouble he's been having in the minors. Just let the damn kid develop. He's 19.

One day, after a long and distinguished career, his hometown will rename their field Gorkys Park.

Ok, I'll stop now.

By the way, this may be hopeless, but can we agree to not call him F-Mart, and perhaps start a pre-emptive movement to resist the obvious in contemporary diminutive nicknaming?

Shop smart, shop F-Mart!

Edit--> oops, didn't see the split thread. So my comment is both inane and out of place.

My fault for not splitting off my own comment.
