Marmol replaces Wood on AS roster-Does Hurdle hate the Mets?

Cub set up reliever Carlos Marmol replaces teammate Kerry Wood on the AS roster. Marmol is the seventh Cub and fifth reliever to be named to the NL AS squad this year. It seems to me that Johan Santana was the most qualified pitcher to replace Wood, especially since Cole Hamels pitched yesterday and thus, would not be available to play this Tuesday.

I'm wondering if there's some bad blood between Clint Hurdle and the Mets. Reyes was also snubbed this year and is a deserving AS. David Wright's initial snubbing may have been the most egregious of all.

He was passed over for Met mgr at one point, wasn't he?

They beat the pants off his team this weekend, didn't they?

Probably could have gone without a 7th Cub but I guess they'd just make the argument that he was only replacing a teammate anyway.

The other thing about Marmol is June + July = 16.1 IP, 17 ER, 14 H, 13 BBs, 4 HRs

He's got like the reverse-Heilman splits.

Hurdle's passing over of Wright wasn't necessarily his fault:

Fans voted Larry in.
Players voted Aramis Ramirez in.

He put Wright on the "Final man" ballot and then gave him the first spot vacated by injury. I don't think he should feel snubbed by Hurdle.

Also, what makes you think Hamels is unavailable to throw an inning? Wouldn't Tuesday be a throw day after pitching on Sunday?

You know, when Joel Youngblood made the All-Star Team in 1981, he couldn't play because he was hurt. In fact, it was pretty clear that he was out long-term when he was selected. He was replaced, but nobody felt an obligation to do it with Dave Kingman or Mookie Wilson or Hubie Brooks or Neil Allen. 'Blood showed up and tipped his cap and, other than that, my 14-year-old self had to accept that our lone All star bert was stillborn.

would've thought johan would've been a good pick for replacement... I also think it would've been awesome to put in sabathia or harden

Foot in mouth. My apologetics. As I read that I saw the popup before me.

Who am I thinking of that was hurt as the lone rep during the Torre era?

Stearns, maybe?

1978 was the only "Torre" year in which no Met got into the All-Star Game.

Maybe he could. But off the top of my head, I can't recall a pitcher starting on the Sunday before the AS game and then pitching in the AS game two days later.

Frazier era folded into Berra-Frazier era above; Torre era repurposed as Torre-Bamberger-Howard era.

Too lazy to look it up, but it's my recollection that Seaver never started an ASG - or at least never as a Met
