Thoughts on the Game 7/17

I thought about this all night.

Someone said, "I used to think about how they're going to blow it. Now I think about how they're going to win it." In fairness, they did both.

I can't think of who I really wanted against Javier Freakin' Valentin there. He's never been much righthanded, but the Show doesn't have much to come in on righthanders with. Felciano has a slider that darts toward righthanders' knees, but that's a risky pitch with the bags full. Batting lefthanded, I think he'd have little trouble getting around on Sanchez and Smith. My top choices are Wagner and Heilman, even though Aaron was the one who pitched us into that situation. I guess my point is that our bullpen is so specialized that it makes us vulnerable to switch hitters.

Once upon a time, I think, Junior comes down with David Wright's homer in his glove. These days, I guess they're just happy he came down un-hurt.

Delgado going the other way with a pitch beneath his knees may have been the best hit of the night. I won't mind seeing him hit fifth any time soon.

Has the game has passed Dusty Baker by?

David Weathers never fails to suprise me.

It'd be cool to get Evans contributing.

You don't often hear the words, "And Schneider was right in the middle of that rally." OK, you don't ever hear that. His strike three looking was hilarious, because it was like he was zoning for something away. He wanted nothing to do with the pitch. Hey, Brian, two strikes. At least cock your arms like you might swing.

Is this the first game where the Mets were down by three or more and came back to win?

My thinking was never "How are they going to blow this" but rather, "Now that they have, you can turn the TV off."

There must have been 4 or 5 "bad things" that happened last night that ordinarily would have killed the Willie Mets. Then afterward we'd explain it away by saying, "see, that's what happens when Reyes takes an ohfer. The whole team sucks!!" etc

All I was thinking was, "I'm pretty sure Javier Valentin was responsible for one of those typical knifed-in-the-heart Met losses of the Willie Era. Which one?" Turns out, it was some other fat catcher. (cough) Molina.

Not sure I would have yanked Heilman at all. Anyway, when the Reds finally give up Affeldt might be a help.

One month and one day ago, he does. Credit also to Wright, who seems to have found the extra 18 inches he needs to turn all those warning-track outs into HRs.

Easley continues complaining of a wanky quadriceps too. Gotta get him down in the order

Yes. The Reds lose an awful lot for a team with a buttload of good hitters.

He did single up the middle batting for Santana, which was nice to see and helped produce a run. He's capable of looking like shit though, and he blinks an awful lot.

The WPA graph is more fun if you imagine it's a roller coaster with Dusty Baker riding in the first car.

Last night was the first night in a long time where those "woulda been a routine fly-ball at Shea" home runs worked in our favor. The exception, of course, being Delgado's which left the state.

Forgive if this came up already, but last night was the first game the Mets won in Cincinnati when trailing by two entering the ninth since Jesse Orosco played right field.

They also trailed by two in the ninth against the Reds --- albeit at home --- in Tucker Ashford's Met debut.
