Fernando Tatis is leading the Majors in OPS for the month of July.*

(*Among players with 3.1 plate appearances for each game that their team has played this month.)

All the more reason his GIDP on a 3-1 pitch last night was such a nutpunch.

If Fernando Tatis had just one more plate appearance this month*, he'd be leading the Majors in Batting Average, Slugging Percentage and OPS for the month of July.** He'd also be leading the NL in OBP for the month of July, second in the Majors only to Manny Ramirez (.500 to .486) and he'd be second in the Majors in RC27, trailing Adam Laroche (14.77 to 14.47)

(*Tatis has 70 plate appearances in 23 Mets games played this month.)

Update: Fernando Tatis is leading the Majors in BA, SLG and OPS for the month of July, and is leading the NL in OBP for the month of July. I simply credited Tatis with the extra At-Bat he needed to qualify and assumed that the extra at-bat resulted in an out. Tatis still came out on top in the above categories.

What's RC27? If that's a stupid question, please forgive my ignorance.

Frayed Knot
Jul 28 2008 08:30 AM

'Runs Created' per 27 outs.

Runs created is the result of throwing the sum total of a hitter's output into a formula that estimates how many runs he personally adds to a team. Then dividing that total by each 27 outs (full game) he makes adjusts for playing time and shows how many runs a theoretical lineup full of said player would score.

How do they define runs created for the RC27 formula? Is it the old (R + RBI) - HR? Or is it something more complex?

RC27 is an acronym for "Runs Created over 27 outs". Tatis' RC27 for the month of July is 14.47. Thus, a lineup comprised of nine Fernando Tatis' would score 14.47 runs if given 27 outs at the rate of three per inning. I used ESPN.com's web site for the stat, and thus, ESPN.com's formula for RC27. Formulas for RC27 vary.

It's more complex. Runs Created formulas were originally reverse engineered by working with statistical season totals for leagues, and then working backwards to create a formula that would predict as closely as possible, the number of runs scored by the league. Statisticians preferred working with league totals because of the large sample sizes the data would yield.

More complex.
Basically it's some form of (A*B)/C where A is getting on base, B is power, and C is plate appearences.
There are numerous versions of RC. Some attempt to include every GiDP, SF, SB, CS, etc., in an attempt to fine-tune it down to the smallest detail. Others just use the major stats and figure that the other stuff is pretty much a wash.

Here's a wiki entry for runs created:

Just to show how the 'per/27 outs' part comes into play;

ESPN's stats show Reyes as currently 9th in the NL in raw 'Runs Created'. But of course he comes to bat more than most others so when the per/27 part factors in he drops to 22nd on account of making more outs while creating those runs.

Nope. It's like Moose or Fish.

If you have a lineup of 9 Fernandos, it would be 9 Tatis.

With his two for four last night including a triple, Fernando Tatis continues ro lead the Majors in Batting Average, Slugging Percentage and OPS for the month of July.*

Tatis (14.79) also passed Adam Laroche (14.77) for the July Major League league-lead in RC27.

Tatis' .486 also leads the NL in OBP for the month of July, second in the Majors only to Manny Ramirez (.494).

The Pitcher of the Month seems to be down to teh final start for Mssrs. Jiminez, Pelfrey, and Sabathia. Ollie has had a great month also, but isn't walking away with the decisions.

Yes, I realize that 5.1 innings pitched shouldn't qualify Hoffman for Anything of the Anything, but I wanted a representative reliever had he had the best perfect save record at seven for seven.

I'm skeptical about Tatis winning the Player of the Month award. Although Tatis clearly has the best rate stats in the NL, there are a few candidates who have closely maintained Tatis' pace over 20-30 more plate appearances.

Twenty or 30 plate appearances is significant when looking at monthly totals. Those additional plate appearances constitute between 25 and 45% of Tatis JUly plate appearances to date. Tatis is, for example, 12th in the NL in Runs Created for the month of July.

Delgado made a strong statment last night to perhaps take the lead in Player of the Month jockeying, while Tatis sat and stewed. I'm adding Matt Holliday to the list, not so much because of a late surge as the field falling back toward him. J.J. Hardy is falling back in the pack.

On the pitching side, Matt Cain was in action, striking out eight and giving up just two runs, one earned, in seven innngs. A good enough effort for the Dodgers to hand Cain and his Giants the loss.

Eight innngs of shutout ball by Carlos Zambrano throws his Cubbie hat into the ring, though. No more indulging Hoffman.

I discount Laroche, because doing it in a pennant race always starts to count to some degree. I discount Tatis because his rate stats are noticeably lower.
I think whichever of the Braun/Delgado/Hardy hits the 10th HR is the one who'll win. Great month for the mets though - two players not named, Jose, David or Beltran in the running for the POTM - who'd have thought that.

I have no idea how to look that up. Fielding splits? Can't find em. He's been good this year, though, and I'd think getting that sort of production from your shortstop is more valuable than getting it from your left fielder or first baseman.
