Presidential trivia, in honor of Gerald R. Ford's birthday!

Good Monday morning.

Gerald Ford's family is in town today to mark what would have been his 95th birthday, and will lay a wreath at his gravesite across the street.

And that fits in perfectly with today's presidential calendar trivia.

Only one president in buried in Washington, D.C. Who is it?

Edgy, no fair!

OK, but you've got to disqualify bmfc and Valadius also.

Correct!

He's interred at the Washington National Cathedral, which had visions of being an American Westminster Abbey for a while.

A bit of a trick question because folks sometimes forget that Arlington National Cemetery -- where Kennedy and Taft are buried -- is in Virginia.

John F. Kennedy and William H. Taft is buried at Arlington National Cemetary.

I guess that doesn't count as officially being in D.C. It just seems like it's in D.C. when you're driving around there.

GWB has been buried there for some time now.

What president's last surviving child died almost 103 years after her father left office?

Who is the only president to have both a city and a province named after him in a country outside the US?

What other president has a city named after him outside the US?

Number 1 is likely Teddy Roosevelt.

Number 2 or 3, I expect, would be Washington.

Going with Monroe on #2 ... or maybe #3

Ooooh, Monrovia.

#1 can't be TR since he hasn't been out of office 103 years yet (100 next March)

Cleveland had a kid while in the WH I think, I'll go with him.

Baby Ruth Cleveland, as in the candy bar. I bet that's correct.

John Tyler had something like 15 kids, including some later.

Good question!

Can't be as the legend has it, the bar was named after she died.

#3. As AG/DC pointed out, there's Monrovia.

="metsguyinmichigan"]John Tyler had something like 15 kids, including some later.
Tyler is correct. His youngest daughter, Pearl, was born in 1860 and lived until 1947. Her father left office in 1844.

Still no answer to the President who has both a province and a city named after him in a country outside the US. As a hint, he has no such honor within the US. In fact, he's barely honored at all.

Ah! Hardingville!

:)

Good question.

Well, since nobody has cared to guess, I'll flip all the cards and give the answer:

Rutherford B. Hayes.

Yup. And you'd probably never guess the country, either.

It's Paraguay. There is the Presidente Hayes province. Its largest city and former capital is Villa Hayes, just north of Ascuncion.

Why Hayes? Why Paraguay? Well, after the War of the Triple Alliance (where Paraguay lost up to 90% of its population), the victors (Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina) couldn't come to an agreement over what to do about some of the disputed land. Eventually, Hayes was called in to arbitrate the dispute. He found for Paraguay. The country was so delighted they named their new province after Hayes and renamed the city for him (the city's nickname is "City of the Five Names," so evidently another name change was taken in stride).

I was going to guess President Manitoba but after that I was stumped.
