The Open Championship

Otherwise known as the British Open, on this side of the pond, gets kicked off this week. This will be the first major without Tiger looming as the overwhelming favorite so the field is wide open.

Kenny Perry is having a great season, winning this past weekend, but is drawing criticism over his intent to skip the major. Padraig Harrington is the defending champ so you'd have to throw him in amongst the contenders. Maybe Mickelson, Els, Garcia etc. will find some magic with Tiger resting in Florida.

Nothing says summertime on England's west coast like a 57 degree day w/25 MPH winds and sideways rain.

Rocco at -1. How could one not cheer for this guy?

Rocco's -1 tied with 2 others currently for the lead.

Greg Norman - who I hasn't played in one of these since forever it seems - shakes the rust off his game and ditches his new bride for an even par round.

And Phil takes advantage of Tiger's absence by cruising to a +9
Also Ernie Els at +10; Vijay Singh +10; John Daly +10 (no word on how many beers he consumed during the round)

Leader in the clubhouse halfway through day 2 = 53 y/o Greg Norman with an even par 140

Mediate in good shape at +3 today and +2 overall

On the Thurs & Fri of an event, those who get early tee times on Thursday get later ones of Friday and vice-versa.
Those with the early-then-late times are getting a raw deal this year as they got the worst of the weather on Thursday while the afternoon group got relative calm. and are expected to get the short end of the stick today as they face the storms while the morning group escaped the worst of it.

Norman still the clubhouse leader , defending champ Harrington had a good day firing a -68 to get in contention, incredibly David Duval is tied for second at -2 through 12 holes.

Korean native KJ Choi slides into the lead at -1 so he'll be paried with Norman in the final group on Saturday.

Duval being within sniffing distance of the lead is a big story just by itself

Apparently the predicted bad weather didn't materialize on Friday - but the projections for Saturday are worse still

Duval Shmuval. Marrying Chris Evert and coming back from a decade in obscurity a month later to be leading a British Open going into the weekend... that's your story.

sounds comfortable compared to the heat.

For about half a day that weather might feel good - but, geez, I'm watching guys out there wearing 4 layers of clothing topped by a thick sweater and wool cap and I'm thinking ... this is July?!?!
No wonder folks left that island by the boatful and camped out over here!

There has been a sun sighting today though.

Anyway;
Choi -1; Norman E
Villegas +1; Mediate +2
Furyk +2; Graeme McDonald +2
Allenby +2; Noren (?) +2
Harrington +2; Duval +2
... are the last 5 groups to go off today.

Els, Singh and a bunch of others missed the cut - including John Daly who followed up his (+10) 80 on Thursday by mailing in an 89 on Friday

Mickelson (+8) & Garcia (+5) did sneak in under the cut number (+9) but aren't in serious contention unless they throw up a low numbr today (and Phil, so far, isn't)

The Great [strike]White[/strike] Gray Shark survived a day with sustained 35-MPH winds and hangs onto the lead.

Some of the earlier tee times (Wakefield, Curtis, Stenson) escaped the worst of the wind and posted good scores then sat back and watched as the leaders fell back towards them.
No one managed a sub-par score and the field averaged ~ +6

Els and Singh misssing a cut in the same tournament is astounding, no?

Singh particularly strikes me as a very consistent player.

Against the odds maybe, but not so much astounding right now.

Ernie screwed up his knee a couple years back in some off-course activity (water-skiing I think) took a bunch of time off because of it and really hasn't been the same since.
Vijay's problem was that he was such an INconsistent putter when he was younger that once he got good at that he was starting to age and the rest of his game began diminishing. He had a nice prime but it was relatively brief.
(besides, I screwed up earlier, Els did make the cut although still well out of contention)

Crissy's ring is only slightly smaller than a golf ball.

Part of the fun in watching B.O. golf is listening to the sing-song accent of the 1st tee starter who announces each group as they come up. Same guy every year regardless of the course.

For those following David Duval, he shot an 83 in the third round, tying for worst score of the day.

Very annoying that ABC keeps missing the tee shots coming back from commercial , that second shot on 17 by Harrington was just brilliant, great call by the crew as well.

Norman bogeying 1, 2 & 3 took the starch out of his day almost before it began.

Harrington then stumbled a bit when he bogied 7, 8 & 9 but, overall, he had the steadiest day in the 35 MPH winds.

A 20 y/o British amateur named Wood was briefly in the mix and wound up finishing 4th

Ian Poulter and his pink pants made a nice charge but he just was too far back to start and it was too little, too late. Wound up tying Norman.

That would be Ian Poofter, with those pants.
