What's the deal?

I can't go for any of the choices above. I'm not saying that he's "a rare and special artist," but I've seen him in concert several times so it's fair to say I'll go out of my way to see him.

I think that he's a great songwriter and guitarist, that he has a weak voice, and that sometimes he's too smart for his own good. But all that said, I love his music.

If that's not your cup of tea that's fine. But you don't have to be judgmental about other people liking music that's not to your personal taste.

I don't get him or like him . I especially don't get that he's some sort of guitar hero.

I dindn't mean to obscure with nuance. Read the choices as

a) I like him a lot
b) I like him a little
c) I neutral him
d) I dislike him a little
e) I dislike him a lot

Fuck the choices. I'll stick with my previous description and leave it at that.

Hey, wait. Who was I judgmental about? I'm the one tagged as ageist?

You're the one who popped into the Billy Joel concert to make a snide remark about Mayer's participation.

Which, wasn't judgmental about anybody except modestly the artists themselves.

I'm wondering out loud about why he in particular is the young artist of choice for all these older artists. Valid question.

Seo beat me to it, but he has a knack for amusing little skits (I liked one where he walked around the lot of one of his shows in a bear costume and messed with unwitting fans) that almost makes up for the fact that his music is godawfully boring and his fanbase is annoying as all hell.

His participation on Chappelle's Show get him all the way up to "neutral" in my book.

I agree. I wish his music was as quirky and original as his personality seems to be.

One of the problems for me , apart from the music is that I associate Meyer with shows like Regis and Kelly .

Saw a free John Mayer concert in Chicago's Grant Park on July 4th last year. The biggest surprise to me is that he is a very good, accomplished guitarist. He seems to keep that aspect of his talent hidden on most of his recordings. He seems content to mine the gold that his soft pop love songs keep providing for him.

The guy can really play a blistering, blues influenced guitar when he wants to. There were a few times during his Chicago set that I had to remind myself (and assure my wife) that it really was John Mayer on stage. Maybe his opening act of Robert Randolph and the Family Band brought the guitar player out in him, but he really surprised me that day.

At least on that day, John Myer was not what I expected or what I have heard from his recordings.

It depends on which recordings you have. The blues CDs are very guitar-heavy.

I think he's adorable. Bunny-cute.

I didn't find the sketch so funny, though. It seems like a pre-emptive strike to protect himself. Nobody can call me an arrogant dick if I call myself that.

I've seen that game. I invented that game.

"No Such Thing" is one of my favorite songs of the decade. I liked "83," too. He made a nice contribution to Billy Joel Wednesday night. If MF likes him, then I'm all for him otherwise.
