Do not upgrade to the new version of iTunes if you don't have to. I "upgraded" last week, and haven't been able to get it to load since.

After spending way too much time on the phone and in e-mail with a (very pleasant) tech support guy, engineering informed the tech support guy that they can't fix the problem and they want me to first start dealing with Dell to find a fix. Rather than that, my tech support guy is going to help me just re-install the older version of iTunes. I don't know what I'm missing with the new one, but at least the older version works.

I upgraded last Saturday and have downloaded a bunch of new apps with no problems , the apple remote is a very cool app. There is also a great "Sports Tap" app , all the scores you want in real time.

From reading the apple discussion boards they are a lot of people having problems though.

I can deal with the fact that there are problems. I'm less happy with the fact that Apple engineering doesn't want to take responsibility for fixing the problems that they caused in the first place.

That's bad and timely news for me.

Just got a new Dell at home and was going to transfer all my iTunes stuff tonight.

So....don't do it I guess.

Have you installed iTunes on the new computer yet?

If you have, and it's working, then transfer away. If not, see whether you can load the older version of iTunes on it, just to be safe.

Since this was launched along with the iPhone 3G there have been numerous problems and to my knowledge Steve Jobs has not spoke on it , don't expect Apple to take blame here.

Metfairy , have you checked in on apple discussion boards ?. They have helped me in the past with problems.

Fuck Apple. Fuck Macs. Fuck Steve Jobs.

Yeah, I'm cranky today. But after spending three and a half hours on the phone with tech support Tuesday, only to have engineering wash their hands of the problem they created, I'm not enamored of Apple right now.

Irish - I haven't been on the Apple boards, but if I spend much more time on the phone with my tech support guy I think we'll be going steady.

Have not installed it yet. How would I load the older version? Is it still available for download?

soup - I'm waiting to link up again with my tech support guy. We traded e-mails today, and he knows that I'm home now, but I don't know when he leaves work today. But once he gets me through re-installing the older version, I'll let you know and forward the instructions to you.

He works 18 hours a day , don't worry about that.

De nada.

I just can't tell you when that time will be, since I haven't heard back from my tech support guy yet.

soup - at the right side of this page you can download the older version of iTunes.

Unfortunately, since I already "upgraded," I'm still having trouble opening iTunes despite going back to the older version. Ugh!

On Mac, I get occasional queries to update to latest versions of software and it's always smooth as silk. But since accepting the latest iTunes update, I cannot sync it to my iPod. iTunes still works but it just doesn't want to accept the iPod into it.

We'll look into 7.6. Thanks.

I thought it was just PC users who were screwed by iTunes 7.7.

Good luck - hopefully you'll be able to re-sync your iPod.

What a mess. What a freakin' mess....

Greg , I am sure you probably have but I bet you can find help on the apple boards for your problem, I've had similar problems in the past that got fixed by going there, things like lost library , syncing problems with a new touch...

Welcome to Planet Apple. Let me guess: "it's a free product, so kiss off."

I've been having to deal with their arrogance and incompetence at work trying to set up iTunesU.

I finally got my iTunes working again!

I encountered the same error message with some other apps this morning, and the error message from the other apps suggested that I install the newest version of Shockwave. I did, and now everything is working perfectly! iTunes is opening on my computer and syncing with my iPod.

I'm still pissed off at Apple for not figuring this out weeks ago. But I'm very happy that I was able to get iTunes working again.

This thread makes me glad that I don't use ITunes.

With the exception of this situation, I've been happy with iTunes. I've been reacquainting myself with it today and like it overall.

In the midst of reinstalling it, though, I turned off the automatic updates option. And I don't plan on "upgrading" to any newer versions until Apple has a few weeks to find the bugs and work them out.

I downloaded 7.7 and then transferred all my info from my laptop to my PC.

It worked for the most part but about 200 songs (out of about 4,000) did not transfer as well as some album artwork.

I'll consider myself lucky and try to figure out which stuff did not come over and why tonight.

This shouldn't be this difficult.

I'm glad that it went well for you soup :)

I spoke too soon.

All my songs are now on my iTunes and my iPod. They play fine on iTunes but they don't play on the iPod.

The album artwork is also on iTunes but only shows up sporadically, if at all, on the iPod.

Ugh. I have a few ideas of what to do but man, what a pain in the ass.

In the midst of everything on Saturday, I downloaded an upgrade to my iPod (a total leap of faith, under the circumstances). Perhaps you need the newer iPod version to be compatible with 7.7.

Good luck!

I bought my iPod in March!

I will try that but geez.

themetfairy
Jul 30 2008 08:12 AM

FWIW, I bought mine in January.

But the newer iPod software may be necessary to make your iPod compatible with the "upgrade" to 7.7.

soupcan
Jul 30 2008 08:14 AM

Since you've got it all figured out, why don't we just trade iPods?

metirish
Jul 30 2008 08:48 AM

Sounds like you need the 2.0 upgrade , Apple will charge you $9.95 for that.

Is your Ipod the ipod touch , because I believe that only the iPone and touch are compatible with the upgrade.

Anyone else have problems now with time and date when you sync , I did but fixed it.

soupcan
Jul 30 2008 09:27 AM

Mine's not a Touch. just an old style 80gb.

So you can join in on mocking my musical taste? I think not!

I have a Nano 8 GB. The first time I synced it after fixing my iTunes I was given the option to download the iPod upgrade, which thankfully did its job properly.

If nothing else, the spectre of competition might force Apple to get its friggin' act together.

I have one of the old 20 Gig Dell DJ II units mentioned in the article. Pretty straightforward and basic, but works like a charm after almost 4 years of use.

Okay - iPod working again. It took one of those 'hold-down-the-center-button-while-simultaneously-pressing-menu-button' restart.

It's playing songs and showing the abum artwork, the games are back. I only play Klondike (solitaire) so that wasn't a huge deal.

I think I'm still missing about 400 songs though. I still have them on my old PC though so eventually I'm hoping this ship will right itself.

All things considered, it sounds like you did pretty well.

Enjoy the music, and the new computer!

Did you use this method to transfer you music Soup?.

Use your iPod as an external hard drive.

This morning I opened iTunes on my desktop and got a message that iTunes 7.7.1 is available for download.

I checked the "Do not ask again" box and then clicked cancel.

Liking the new update to iTunes 8.0 , and especially like the new "Genius" feature.

Play a song push the Genius tab and it will create a playlist of similar artists. One of the fun things is seeing what songs it comes up with.....of course on iTunes itself it will show you songs that you don't have and can buy. A few times I was told that "Genius Not Available " for that song....it was Thin Lizzy....so at times "Genius" can be a twat.

I've read reports of Vista users getting the "blue wall of death" screen .

Thanks for the report Irish.

After my problems with 7.7, you couldn't pay me to try another one of Apple's "upgrades."

Yeah, I'm bitter....

For some reason now when I type into the search box in iTunes it comes out in Arabic. This doesn't happen in any other application.
