Wigginton and Matsui, seems like old times.

I hope Pedro brings his A game today. The Mets need to put and end to their recent little stumble and get back on track. They need a series win and taking the opener would be a nice start.

KC
Aug 01 2008 05:42 PM

I don't believe that Pedro has an A game, I'd be happy with a B- or C+ and
take the flak for if I'm wrong.

If he comes out and stinks up the joint, I hope he retires.

Rockin' Doc
Aug 01 2008 06:08 PM

I guess I didn't phrase that properly. I was just hoping that Pedro the best of what he has left.

I think Pedro still has an 'A' game. It's just that his present 'A' game is a poor imitation of what once passed as his 'B' or 'B-" game.

Reyes singles and Chavez sac bunts him to second. Wright singles Reyes home with the opening run.

The Sacrifice bunt actually worked this time, but I still don't like it. The Mets still seem to regard the second hitters main job as simply moving Reyes along if he gets on. Jerry seems to be emulating WWSB fairly often.

Matsui hit 3 homers so far this year?

3 quick grounders, so maybe that is a good sign right there.

To be fair, Chavez was bunting to get on base. He had as much a chance to beat that bunt out as he did driving the ball to the outfield for a hit, if not more.

Hey Gary, ever thought that maybe Beltran did a ton of stuff with the Houston community, and made it seem that he just might have WANTED to be an Astro afterward?

Look into things instead of blindly saying "I don't get it."

To say nothing about the whole "Rest of the Nation vs. New York City" aspect.

Gary Cohen was wondering why Astro fans have such hatred towards Carlos Beltran, especially since he was just a rent-a-player.

SteveJRogers
Aug 01 2008 06:49 PM

Another note to Mr. Cohen, the Mets are very much still doing bobblehead giveaways, Sunday Aug. 10th is Billy Wagner BOBBLEHEAD DAY! (Get your jokes ready)

Also Johan Santana is due to get one in September (again, get those jokes ready)

And I'm surprised Gary didn't forget the most annoying bobblehead of all, last year's Endy Chavez "Catch" bobblehead that was sponsored by AIG (who's ad Endy made the catch in front of), as well as a Paul Lo Duca one.

seawolf17
Aug 01 2008 06:58 PM

Someone get me a Lance Berkman bobblehead so I can paint my name over his.

And someone go on August 6 and get me a Mets baseball card pack.

I like this Tatis kid. Gonna be a good player.

SteveJRogers
Aug 01 2008 07:02 PM

Take it easy there Irish Head!

Wolfie, sadly I doubt there are going to be any "special" cards in that pack, all the images shown on screen look like they are from the actual set, or either of the 14 card or 55 card Met set.

Doesn't mean I can't have one. Go to the game and send me a pack.

You know, these little dink and dunk hits just drive you crazy... unless they're for your team, in which case they're awesome.

SteveJRogers
Aug 01 2008 07:03 PM

Nice rally we got going!

Now have to get Pedro from giving up homers to the least likely players!

TransMonk - "To be fair, Chavez was bunting to get on base. He had as much a chance to beat that bunt out as he did driving the ball to the outfield for a hit, if not more."

Thanks for the information. That's one of the problems of "watching" most Mets games via Gameday. I seldom get to actually see the action. Sorry for falsely accusing Jerry Manuel of acting like WWSB.

seawolf17
Aug 01 2008 07:11 PM

Ah, for fuck's sake, Pedro, cut it out with the fucking home runs.

SteveJRogers

What Wolfie just said.

Vince Coleman Firecracker

Hamels getting lit up again: 3 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 49 pitches.

KC
Aug 01 2008 07:21 PM

RD: I guess I didn't phrase that properly. I was just hoping that Pedro the best of what he has left.

I knew what you meant, I didn't phrase my response properly.

I'm frustrated thinking the Mets believe that he can contribute in a large way.

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Aug 01 2008 07:22 PM

Guess the bloops go the other way, too. Pedro at 70 pitches through 3 2/3, looks like a whole lotta bullpen again.

Aug 01 2008 07:25 PM

For a major league rehab Pedro is doing OK.

KC
Aug 01 2008 07:26 PM

True enough, 'irish.

seawolf17
Aug 01 2008 07:27 PM

But for major league pitching, not so much.

KC
Aug 01 2008 07:29 PM

I'm just trying to not rag on him, tired of seeing him come back and fail.

KC
Aug 01 2008 07:33 PM

More importantly, I mean I'm tired of him failing ... leaving ... and then
some think that his return is going to be something of large value.

Guys with only a good inning or so to offer belong in the pen.

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Aug 01 2008 07:38 PM

Nifty DP!

TransMonk
Aug 01 2008 07:39 PM

Helluva DP 5-4-3!

seawolf17
Aug 01 2008 07:44 PM

You know what, Carlos? If they're going to overshift in the sixth inning when you're leading off, you drop a bunt on their ass. This isn't a home run situation anyway. Get on base, baby.

What the hell is Keith talking about?

seawolf17

Or you could double into the corner. That'd be okay too.

I think Keith is off his meds tonight; he's extra silly.

I might have an aneurysm if Reyes bunts here.

Gary Cohen shows us again that he is the best in the biz. He called Reyes pulling it by Berkman.

Vince Coleman Firecracker
Aug 01 2008 08:03 PM

And now the Mets tradition of putting awful hitters (sorry, Endy) in the 2 slot is put to the test. No whammies!

Endy has had 2 especially shitty turns at bat this game.

bmfc1
Aug 01 2008 08:21 PM

Jerry probably thought that the Mets would take the lead by the end of the inning so he didn't want to lose Endy's glove... except that you have to take the lead before you can worry about protecting the lead. He should have PH Evans (Castro is too much of a DP threat).

metirish
Aug 01 2008 08:23 PM

And Evens is too much of a threat not to get a hit there.

He didn't score.

Frayed Knot
Aug 01 2008 08:43 PM

Berkman probably gets less pub than any other great hitter in MLB today, but he's not exactly in charge of bringing the potato salad to the next MENSA meeting if you know what I mean.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Aug 01 2008 08:44 PM

Omar's plan of not getting an outfielder whp can hit, a pinch hitter worth shit or to bolster a bullpen so lousy that Heilman has to stay in there until he loses is really paying off too.

Fuck this team.

AG/DC
Aug 01 2008 08:47 PM

Wow.

I was really really wrong about him.

Of course, doesn't mean I wasn't right about Sanchez not bieng a good choice. I'll, um, stick with that.

TransMonk
Aug 01 2008 08:49 PM

We load the bases w/ no outs and our 2-3-4 hitters soil themselves.

They load the bases w/ no outs and get a pinch-hit grand slam.

No shit. I'm so down on these guys. Sure the results have been better lately and they appear to bounce back better but they just cannot stop themselves from absorbing loss after loss like this. Every loss is a complete cockpunch. And every problem they have is plain as the nose on their faces but isn't addressed.

Greetings from Houston.

I assure you this game was 50% worse in person. I'll never get that 5 minutes of hell back after the Loretta home run. Especially because Jerry lifted Heilman at that point, which only propelled the celebration on further. (Fortunately, Texas hospitality prevailed and it was "ok" being there, rather than the "I kinda fear for my safety right now" feeling that I get in Philly when something like that happens).

The Schneider "hit" was a egregious example of hometown scoring. Tejada had what I like to call a "completely unnecessary spin-move" but then threw it away, when any good throw at all would have nailed Schneider.

Sanchez warmed when the Mets were batting in the top of the 8th but I was fine with sticking with Heilman.

Misc. notes from Houston:
The ballpark is a very pleasant experience. Food options are limited but the barbeque baked potato was reported as 'super-yummy.' As far as roofed parks go, it's nicer than Toronto, Arizona or Milwaukee but not as nice as Seattle. I'm still a little unsure about if I like air-conditioned baseball but it certainly would have been unpleasant in the Houston heat. (Tomorrow we are in Texas to see TOR-TEX so I'll have a point for comparison).

Kaz Matsui was greeted warmly before the game by Wright and Reyes, and Delgado (ever the classy gentleman) greeted him with a bow.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Aug 01 2008 10:52 PM

Have fun in Texas, stay away from the Mets!
