That is so Valentinian.

Beltran batting second.

First time this year, seventh time as a Met. (3 times in 2005 and 3 times in 2007.)

TheOldMole
Aug 02 2008 05:04 PM

I woulda moved Beltran to second as soon as Delgado reclaimed cleanup.

AG/DC
Aug 02 2008 05:25 PM

Last night's bases-loaded failure kind of forced the issue, I think.

Murphy singles in his first at bat, then scores on an Easley Kaboom.

Nice start for Willets youngster and a nice start for the Mets against a tough pitcher.

I like it. Especially with Tatis hitting lights out.

KC
Aug 02 2008 05:37 PM

Jeez, hard to follow Beltran's hit at all on tv with the sun drenched field.
Must be murder on the outfielders.

AG/DC
Aug 02 2008 06:27 PM

Can you imagine the veins that we'd be opening if we had released Delgado?

And he was hitting like this?

For somebody else?

On the Mets' dime?

batmagadanleadoff
Aug 02 2008 06:30 PM

Delgado's fielding is improved as of late also. He's consistently making great scoops on throws and batted balls and in general, appears to be playing with an increased mobility, defensively.

I was wondering if perhaps, this Beltran in the #2 hole is really a Tatis vote of confidence -- a belief that Tatis' productive hitting is sustainable, and not a short-lived fluke.

Hi guys,

I see Murphy is in left. Isn't he an infielder?

TheOldMole
Aug 02 2008 06:41 PM

Not any more. In the absence of Church, Jerry plans to play Tatis in right, and platoon Evans and Murphy in left.

Murphy, when asked about his preferred position, said "I don't care, as long as I can hit."

He's looked awkward but not impossible in left.

But this gives them infielders on both corners.

KC
Aug 02 2008 06:41 PM

Third, second, first, outfield ... he said he doesn't have a preference in the
pre-game show so long as he gets to hit.

Yeah a third baseman, has played LF and first base in the minors.

Gary was saying tonight that Murphy played ball with Anthony Bernazard and that is where he came to the attention of Anthony's dad Tony.

Aug 02 2008 06:42 PM

Keith told the story of game six against Houston in 1986 , the 16 inning affair where he claims he told Jesse in no uncertain terms not to throw Bass a fast ball , said tonight that Carter came to the mound and agreed. I have heard Gary say that that story is not true.

I don't think Gary and Keef exchange xmas cards.

metsguyinmichigan
Aug 02 2008 06:48 PM

I suspect if Murphy works out, Anderson might be "disabled" for a long time. Nice to see them getting some runs for Santana...

Or maybe not. Keith and Gary comments about Beltran reminded me that Manuel likes to let struggling hitters work out their kinks from the #2 hole.

We shall see.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Aug 02 2008 07:16 PM

Yeah it took awhile but Beltran's finally going bad enough to hit 2nd.

Gary is obsessed with the whole "lat Reyes steal" thingy.

Meantime, I'm nervous about Duaner here facing the tying run, 1 out.

TheOldMole
Aug 02 2008 07:21 PM

Murphy!!!!! He can throw overalls in my chowder any time.

TheOldMole

And another defensive gem by Delgado.

And they get Berkman.

TheOldMole
Aug 02 2008 07:51 PM

Do the Mets ever stop bleeding, once it starts?

G-Fafif
Aug 02 2008 07:51 PM

Richard Lewis called. He said this looks like the ninth inning from hell.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Aug 02 2008 07:53 PM

We want Eddie!

(he types as Erstad whiffs)

G-Fafif
Aug 02 2008 07:53 PM

What does Richard Lewis know?

TheOldMole

Well, maybe...a big K to Ersrtad.

Richard Lewis was in a Dead Zone episode and was pretty good.

Another blown save as two runs cross the plate at the same time.

That was even weirder than the Dodger double-tag. And not nearly as satisfying.

Aug 02 2008 08:00 PM

Castro hurt. And Lo Duca's available!

metsguyinmichigan
Aug 02 2008 08:02 PM

Freaking Wagner. They're going to have to pry Santana from the game with a crow bar next time he's got a lead.

G-Fafif
Aug 02 2008 08:02 PM

It's the ninth, the Mets are tied and Kaz is up. A scenario that has always filled me with dread in one way or another.

Rockin' Doc
Aug 02 2008 08:02 PM

It as if our bullpen draws straws before each game to determine who's turn it is to blow a potential victory.

Bring in Jesse.

Aug 02 2008 08:05 PM

The way Keith was talking I was sure he was going to leave the booth for a chat on the mound with Wagner.

metsguyinmichigan
Aug 02 2008 08:07 PM

Well, at least he's out of it.

Let's get it in the 10th, and Billy owes Santana beer.

Who do we send out for the 10th? Already used Show and Smith. Feliciano and Heilman are gas men.....

In most cases, but not always. An infield single for instance may score a runner from third, but not from second. A runner can also score from third on a passed ball or wild pitch.

Upon Edit: A balk is another play where the extra base would make a big difference. I believe Armando balked in Reyes from third a few years back.

Bullpen theme song:

Rockin' Doc
Aug 02 2008 08:15 PM

Santana will learn that he needs to go the distance and do the job himself if he wants to get a win. The Mets bullpen just can't be trusted to hold a lead and preserve a win.

Aaron: One of Willie's guys.

Think Aaron knew he was held in such high esteem?

True , and good points Doc. A part of me was responding to Keith who I thought was beating that to death, Keith hates to see fundamental errors.

Frayed Knot
Aug 02 2008 08:23 PM

JEEZ-US FUCKIN' CHISTOPHER!!! - can someone get an out here?!?

Meanwhile, we've barely gotten a hit off their pen over 2 games and about 7 innings now.

G-Fafif

We are mere pitches away from discovering it makes no difference.

I mean C'MON OTHER PEDRO!

Philly won tonight , this would be a tough loss , got to win games where Santana pitches like tonight.

Can't win games when you score early then go virtually hitless for the next 7 innings plus have 3 seperate bullpen guys fuck up.

bmfc1
Aug 02 2008 08:38 PM

And so it goes that the bullpen continues to suck. And someone here actually said the other night when I pleaded for Omar to get some help that doing so is a "knee-jerk" reaction. Well, I had a knee-jerk reaction of nausea to a bullpen that can't get six freakin' outs on a consistent basis.

G-Fafif
Aug 02 2008 08:40 PM

Hard to remember or fathom that this is the same bullpen responsible, in great part, for the ten-game winning streak.

Ron Darling says they need somebody with more "panache" than Carlos Muniz to bring in in a pinch. He didn't say anything about verve.

We've really turned back into the Willie-Era Mets. The bullpen has lost its courage and the usage patterns have gone kablooey, the offense is coming back to its earlier level of suck, we're going quiet for innings at a time, worry over players who aren't there is undermining the performance of the ones who are there and we expect Billy Wagner to protect a 2-run lead vs. a shitty team.
