I hope the Mets remember what happened in San Diego in early June and exact some revenge on the Friars. I've got a small personal stake in this upcoming series.

My dad lives in San Diego and had some fairly serious cancer surgery in late April. I went out there to see him through it and just make sure I saw him because there was a question as to whether or not he would get through the operation. After he came out of the surgery and it was apparent that all was well and his prognosis was excellent, I planned a little event to celebrate his return to good health.

His doctor said that he should back to normal and able to get around within 6 weeks of the surgery. Coincidentally, the Mets were scheduled to be in San Diego at about that same time.

Dad's wife has a large family of her own. They are great folks and have received my father into their family as if he were their father. During the hospital stay they could not have been more supportive of him, myself or my sister. They were really great.

So I wanted to do something to celebrate his recovery and thank them all for being there for him when my sister and I were 3,000 miles away. I called the Padres and booked a suite at Petco for the last of the 4 game set. Dad was thrilled - he loves shit like that. He was able to invite friends of his and act the host and thank everybody for everything. It was a really fun time and everybody had a blast.

Unfortunately, as we all remember too well, that was the game in which Billy Wagner served up a 3 run homer to Tony Clark. You remember that series - the Mets lost the previous 3 by scores of 2-1, 2-1 and, oh yeah - 2-1. I was in San Diego for the whole series. I got to read the San Diego Tribune sports section all weekend - Pods outpitch Mets AGAIN!.

It was good for everybody in the suite because they were all Padres fans and it was a great ending to a game for them, the lowly Padres swept the high-falutin' Mets, etc., etc. In the end, it was fine.

However - I am not a Padres fan and my son - who accompanied me on that trip - is also not a Padres fan. I've been hearing about that series for the past two months - "Hey, remember that game? That was GREAT! Beginning of the end for Randolph..."

I think the Mets owe me this one.
