Report: Jets get permission to talk to Brett Favre

]

The Jets asked for and received permission to speak to Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre, ESPN reported Friday afternoon.

Favre, 38, retired last spring, but he later reversed his decision and now plans to return this season. His rights belong to the Packers, who are apparently planning to move on with Aaron Rodgers -- not Favre -- as their starting quarterback. Favre has asked to be traded if he will not be the starter for Green Bay.

The Jets opened training camp Thursday with Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington expected to compete for the starting quarterback job. However, even at his age, Favre would likely be a substantial improvement on either option.

It would seem to make sense , Jets stocked up over the off season , are they a " win now" team?

I don't recall ever being as sick of hearing about a football player or ex-
football player (short of O J) than this freakin' guy.

I'd rather sit through 3 Jeter Ford Edge commercials these days then get
an ESPNNews update on Favre.

And why's the v where it is the r where it is and when you say it the r
comes first?

Unlike OJ at least Favre admits to being guilty , guilty of retiring to early.

I'm not a Packer or Brett Favre fan. This soap opera has been non-stop for the past 3 years for us in the state.

Most Packer fans I know just want him to go away.

The ultimate backbreaker was when they gave him his own scroll category on ESPN, right along with NFL, AL, NL, NBA, etc.

Ugh.

Not surprising -- the geeks at ESPN live for stories about high-profile guys like Favre and will beat them into the ground whether there's actual news at that moment or not.
The only difference now is that we'll be getting it from the local media as well as the national crew.

Y'know what, folks?

Its getting worse.

All this talk reminds me of a skit on the early days of Saturday Night Live. Dan Ackroyd and Jane Curtin were doing their news spoof. Jane said (and I paraphrase):

"Yesterday there was a plane crash in Siberia. 250 people were killed. But none of them were Americans, so nobody cares".

The last time I looked, Favre is still the property of the Packers. Until he becomes the property of the Jets, he might as well be in Siberia.

Chad will be cut today , probably will end up back with Herm. One month until the first game , enough time for Favre to get in tune with his new team?

I don't really see the attraction, and the national attention this is going to
get all year is going to be unbearable. I guess he'll be on a mission and
sometimes that's good for athletes and their teams - we'll see.

This will be first year in twenty without seats and those couple of games
I was going to buy on StubHub probably just went up 50%. Story of my
freakin' life.

NY rags are already calling him Broadway Brett.

As a Clueless Casual Fan, I approve.

I mean, didn't Pennington suck?

I don't have enough of a grasp on NFL history to properly answer this, but it seems to me that there's a huge gap between Favre the football player (very good - HoFer for sure) and Favre the media sensation (means more to his sport than Ruth and Gretzsky combined). And it's only getting bigger as this 'will he or won't he' saga drags on.

I had ESPN on for a while this morning (mostly with the sound down) just to see how much they'd beat this into the ground. The answer is the first 20 minutes of SportsCenter right off the top were on this one story. They then later went back to it several more times to the point where at least half (and probably more) of a 1 hour show was dedicated to a simple off-season trade of a past-his-prime player for a conditional draft pick.

I think there were some baseball games played yesterday too but 'The Worldwide Leader' seems unaware of that fact.

IIRC, Favre had two years left on his contract when he retired. Is that what the Jets get? Favre for two years, more if he doesn't break in half and they re-sign him?

Nope, he is a good leader and intelligent analyst of the in-game situations. He just doesn't have the arm. When healthiest, he had decent success.

To give a baseball analogy, a smart pitcher without the great stuff. The Jets fans hoped for peak Greg Maddux and were getting current Greg Maddux.

It doesn't matter since none of the NFL contracts are guaranteed anyway.
IF he suxx after year 1 they'll just wave bye-bye and owe him nothing.

Won't he be like 53 by then?
