Kunz up, Maine to DL; Wagner to Doctor

Wags' is getting an MRI and in unavailable today. Maine is going to miss more than 1 start (no surprise there) and Kunz is up. With Hielman gassed and Sanchez sucking, does this make Kunz today's closer?

Discuss.

I would think if we are in a position where a closer is required today, he would get the gig.

I think Fman has already nicknamed him "Punch in the."

I could see them using him as a closer, either him or another hot short-time reliever like Feliciano (doubted) in the future. It all depends on whether or not Bill plays Tuesday ofc.

Am I being too hard to suggest that Wagner should have been on a flight yesterday to NY to get his MRI?
And not wait until tomorrow so he could spend his scheduled off day with his family in Texas?

Perhaps not. The same thought occurred to me as well.

I think some DL time for Wagner could prove to be a blessing in disguise if someone else steps in and shows that Wagner's not as indispensable as some people think.

Or, as has been addressed many times here, maybe Wagner and the Mets could find a hospital in Houston to conduct the MRI?

TheOldMole

They have hospitals in Houston?

Houston is devoid of qualified medical care. Pretty much like what the Mets experienced in Florida this spring. As the Mets have demonstrated time and time again this season, there are now medical facilities outside of New York City that can be trusted to perform the most mundane of medical tests on the Mets personnel.

If he was already elimnated from last night's game by the trainer, I don't know what time could have been bought by sending him home earlier.

I have no problem with this kind of speculation.

David Lennon blogs today that no matter what the MRI showed to expect Wagner to go on the DL. On Church he had this to say.

]

The Ryan Church saga. Not good. I had a discussion with Church as he was packing up following Sunday's loss and he was quite frustrated with how things are going. He took batting practice indoors on Sunday after not doing much of anything on Saturday, but Church said he had no idea of what the team's plans are for him. He was supposed to be on a rehab stint in Port St. Lucie after the Mets left Miami, but Church said on Sunday there had been no talk of that since then. If Church is not sent out for a rehab stint in the next day or two, I think it's time to wonder if he'll actually play again this season.

Internet sez Ruddy Lugo recalled to take Wagner's spot.

It's really encouraging how the Mets are continually downgrading their roster for the pennant race.

Look, I'm not putting it past the Mets to make a showing this season but if Omar isn't fired the day after the season ends -- however it ends -- I'd be shocked.

I would expect Minaya to be fired and Tony Bernazard promoted to GM.

That's what it looks like for sure.

Have you noticed how Omar's juice has just vanished since the whole Willie thing went down. It was as if the Mets knew it would be horrible PR to whack Willie no matter what, so they left Omar out there to take all the "COWARDS IN THE NIGHT" heat and endure that horrifying press conference, and ultimately be the last soldier to fall if/when the team continues to come up short.

I sort of believe now that Omar was Willie's only friend and it might have been the 2 of them (now only 1) vs. Tony & the Wilpons.

Is he still hurt? Or can they just not tell? Maybe they're afraid of hurting him more?

Something doesn't seem right.

Mets' Wagner going on DL

BY ANTHONY RIEBER | anthony.rieber@newsday.com
4:15 PM EDT, August 5, 2008

As expected, the Mets announced that Billy Wagner is going on the disabled list with a strained left forearm.

General manager Omar Minaya said an MRI taken Tuesday showed no structural damage. Minaya called it "good news."

What a wimp. Why doesn't he just throw right-handed until his left arm heals? For the money he's making, he should be able to throw with both arms!

And if he pitches righty, he can't be any worse than he has been!

That's a sign of intelligence in the Mets organization.

What do you prefer? That Wagner's recent inconsistencies were attributable to a decline in talent or to some physical problem that will heal itself in the next few weeks? (Assuming his arm does heal in a few weeks).

I wonder if Ollie told Wags not to get hurt? Maybe Wags shoulda told Ollie to tell him (Wags) not to get hurt. Then the Mets might be in first place.
