Beset by pitching injuries, the MetsNew York Mets are expected to be in the running for veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia if the two-time All-Star holds up well this afternoon in an open workout in Miami.

Several teams are scheduled to scout the workout at the University of Miami, including the Mets, as Garcia tries to work his way back to the majors after shoulder surgery.

Garcia, who is 6-2 in nine postseason starts, made 11 regular-season starts with the Phillies last year before being shut down.

"Freddy is doing great on his rehab," agent Ed Greenberg said yesterday. "[He's] not 100 percent at this point, but we expect that after a few minor league appearances he should be able to help somebody in September and in October."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if he's not activated by August 31, he won't be pitching for anyone in October.

IIRC Garcia was never a hard thrower , which is fine but I would be curious to see what he is topping out at .

Eh, there's always the Frankie Rodriguez rule, which allows a team to replace an injured player with anyone in their system.

They tightened up those injury replacement rules over the last few years but it still is possible to get someone onto the post-season roster as long as he is on your 40-man by Aug 31.

Garcia might be able to help someone this season - but mostly I think that's the carrot he's holding out in order to secure a contract for next year (and maybe beyond). Anything you get this season is a bonus.

Livan Hernandez apparently will clear waivers today , probably will be plenty of teams interested.

Also, a guy who helps you in September can be of value, even if he won't be eligible for the post-season roster.

Correct!
The judges also would have accepted:
Stay away from Livan Hernandez's 1.63 WHIP
Stay away from Livan Hernandez's 13.2 H/9
or
Stay away from Livan Hernandez's -24 PRAA

PRAA?

Jeez, I feel so out of it. I only understand about half the statistical references anymore.

PRAA = Posterior-Rectal-Anal Analysis...
It ranks how big an asshole a particular player is.

When a player is into negative numbers, your into Bonds territory, so be careful

I'll go with Pitching Runs Above Average.

I liked Vic's answer better.

If he's something close to healthy, I'd try to sign him with an option for next year, then use him in long relief for the time being.

I do agree with AG that another bat would be nice, though.
