Shea seats for sale...insulting

metsguyinmichigan
Aug 05 2008 10:08 AM

"We have received a number of inquiries regarding the dismantling of Shea following the 2008 season and access to purchase memorabilia from Shea. We are pleased to advise that the Mets - in partnership with the City of New York which owns and operates Shea Stadium - are offering you the first opportunity to purchase a pair of YOUR seats from Shea Stadium.

“The cost of the pairs of seats is $869 during this limited-time, exclusive offer.

That's just beyond crazy. I have seats from Cleveland and Milwaukee for $100, and even Bush and Tiger stadium seats were two for around $450.

Benjamin Grimm

That does it. I've now lost any hope that I might be able to afford to buy the Mets dugout.

Maybe I'll get a bathroom faucet or something.

Benjamin Grimm

Actually, I should add that I do already have seats from Shea Stadium. They're fragments of the original wooden seats. When they were removed and replaced with the plastic, they were left in a pile at the bottom of the exit ramps. I picked up a couple of pieces and so did my friends. I think mine have moved around with me a couple of times and are in the basement of my house.

Since I already have part of Shea Stadium, a part that dates to 1964, I can sit out the upcoming ripoff frenzy.

For that price I could buy a whole set at Bob's Discount Furniture.

makes sense to sell as many at $869 as possible before lowering the price on anything that doesnt sell at that price.

I have cufflinks made from the plastic seats. I'm fine.

What's the secondary market on those Cleveland and Milwaukee seats?

That's really a bullshit price for those seats.

If you bought some what are you doing with them anyway - putting them in your living room...? Not if you're married. And even if you could, they'd look like crap inside. Stupid plastic seats. You can get away with those old wood ones inside. Touch them up a little and not only are they seats they're also a conversation piece. Plastic? uh-uh.

Putting them out in the yard? Great, you've just paid almost $1,000.00 for two uncomfortable lawn chairs that you can't move around.

I would think about it if they were maybe $250.00 each, but $869.00 for a set is really nervy.

Fuck them.

Aug 05 2008 11:42 AM

The question is whether or not every single one of them will sell. . .and I believe all of them probably will, even at that price.

Benjamin Grimm
Aug 05 2008 11:46 AM

That's for a pair of seats. Shea has about 56,000 seats, or about 28,000 pairs of seats.

If they sell out at their asking price, they'll net a smooth $24,052,000.

Not too shabby.

I wish I could sell my old furniture for that much.

AG/DC
Aug 05 2008 11:47 AM

if they're going to go for $100, then speculators will gobble them up and move them on e-bay for much much more.

The Tigers over-priced their's and a bunch as getting bull-dozed, which is a disgrace.

No idea on the secondary market on the Cleveland or Milwaukee seats. I have them in my baseball room.

Have a pair of wood seats from the Flint hockey arena -- they were free! - in the room, too, though it breaks the theme a little. Look the same, though.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

They'll make close to 24 million if they sell them all. That would be more than Wilpon group paid for the Mets in 1979.

Question there is how much is going to the team. Hopefully, New York Park and Rec or whoever gets the lion's share.

This set his reserve at $200: http://cgi.ebay.com/MILWAUKEE-BREWER-AU ... .m14.l1318

Wooden seat signed by three Holla Famers!

Closed auctions have gone from $50 for one to $500 for two.

Metsblog [url=http://www.metsblog.com/2008/08/05/news-shea-selling-seats-for-869/:1igkkh6t]reports[/url:1igkkh6t] that this offer was emailed to season ticket holders, combination plan and weekday plan holders.

They also report that this was included in the info:

“Proceeds from the Mets’ share of net revenues generated through the sale of seat pairs will be donated to the Mets Foundation, which will distribute the funds to various charities.”

Such as the Wilpon Mets Fan Ass-Ramming Foundation, the Ed Kranepool? Never Heard Of Him Society, and the Coalition To Provide Fancy Private Education For Anyone Named Wilpon.

That's fine and all that the proceeds are going to charity but Joe Fan has been getting so screwed lately you think they could've thrown him a bone here.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Aug 05 2008 12:21 PM

It's a well-known fact that contributions to ass-ramming-related charities decline in times of economic turmoil, so we should thank the Metys for doing their part.

The 24 mills figure vs. the 20 million purchase price for the team was just a comparison, that's all. But it shows what an ass-ramming that investment has become!

i'm curious what share of this the city of new york, which owns the place, is getting. given the city's budget problems i'd hope they drove a hard bargain with the mets, and shouldnt they have a responsibility to the public to sell off city property for as much as they can get?

I expect Hank will be looking for a lot more for seats at MFY II and the seats where Jeter tumbled into will be going to the Smithsonian.

AG/DC
Aug 05 2008 12:31 PM

For what it's worth, the Mets foundatoin, though it may well be the front suggested above, is not a front of Wilpon's creation, as it dates back to 1963.

We put our seats from the Vet around our baseball diamond shaped patio -

Best. Backyard. Ever.

Brewers did a nice job, putting something at everyone's price point. You could get bricks for $10, and even small vials of infield dirt.

As for the Shea seats, they can't sell all 56,000 of them. The reason: They're connected.

They can sell two, then waste one, then two more, then waste one, and so on.

Now, the plastic seat parts that was wasted, you'd think they could sell those, too. I'd pay a couple bucks for one!

AG/DC
Aug 05 2008 01:11 PM

That third seat is probably what they made my cufflinks out of.

themetfairy
Aug 05 2008 01:12 PM

Thanks Michigan.

Our plan all along has been to purchase four Shea chairs, then move two of the Vet chairs to the third base side so we can have home and away seating.

Yeah, I'm still going ahead with it. Despite the crazy money. I know it's insane, but I'll kick myself for years if I pass on it.

I was looking at buying a pair - when I was a kid, our local state rep had a pair of seats from the original Yankee Stadium in his basement, and I always wanted to get a pair from Shea.

But, at that price, I can buy the new oven we need instead.

I called. They're only selling to full season and larger season plan holders right now. They'll get around to the smaller plan holders (like Sunday plan holders) eventually - they wouldn't give me a time frame.

I will say this - $869 a pair is high, but it does include shipping. We had to go down to the Vet to get those chairs, and they were pretty cumbersome to transport.

Check out the link, TMF.

They'll be offering it to plan holders starting on Monday, 8/18. You won't get your actual seats but it appears you can at least choose the color you want.

I should add that it's very much like the Mets to say they have "no information" only to be contradicted by their own website.

The missus and I were having this conversation the night before we learned of the plan. I said I could see buying one seat for like $350, with $500 the absolute upper limit of what I would spend in total (and I don't really have a discretionary seat fund at my fingertips). When we read the details, I'm like "forget it," but she's like "you'll regret it if you don't," and I'm like, "yeah, but who needs two?" Well, she said, we do. Where we gonna put two seats from Shea Stadium? I asked. Somewhere, she said.

I've created a well-meaning monster.

themetfairy

Of course you need two. Unless you're Archie Bunker, and you're the only one who's going to be allowed to sit on the good chair.

Cerrone cleverly reasons that the pricing was based on famous Mets years:

"…i assume the established price is a combination of the numbers 86 and 69, as in 1986 and 1969, the two seasons during which the Mets won a World Series…very clever…"

If the MFYs do that, they'll stick their dopey fans for $2,600.

No doubt. But if the G-F's were to invest in such a seating arrangement, it would constitute, by necessity, the sum of our mutual giftgiving for years to come.

Or we could just sit on our Shea seats out on the curb with the rest of our stuff.
