Sewing up Some Veins

Mentioned in another thread by Lunchbucket that Brian Bannister has a 5.37 ERA and hasn't won since June. Also worth noting that Carlos "Lopez" Gomez has a .644 OPS, 76th of 80 American League qualifiers. Royce Ring, as noted, is dangling on the wire with an 8.47 ERA.

If the Mets want to take things into their own hands, they can batter Heath Bell tonight and swing things a little more toward the blue and orange column.

I was wondering if Philip Humber was going to see any action in Minnesota. Of course, I could check instead of just speculating.. right back.

5.05 ERA for Rochester.

Reports on the progress this season for both Humber & Deolis Guerra have been negative.
So-so for Mulvey.

RHP Philip Humber was named the International League Pitcher-of-the-Week on Monday, for the week of July 28-August 3. Humber was 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA in two starts. In 15.2 innings of work, Humber allowed just four runs on 11 hits while walking just four and striking out 19. Humber is the fifth Red Wing to win an IL weekly award joining OF Darnell McDonald, OF Denard Span, LHP Francisco Liriano and OF Jason Pridie. Rochester’s five weekly awards winners match Pawtucket for the most awards in the IL this season. This is the first time Rochester has had five award winners in one season since 2004.

Maybe he's turning it around.

I spent a weekend with the Rochester Red Wings back in 1991 doing the Mickey Weston stories. Learned more about baseball that weekend than I could imagine -- especially the last day, which we spent in the stadium photo bin, which was just an extension of the dugout.

The team gave me and our photog total access, so we were all over the place.

They've since moved on to a new stadium, but we had a lot of fun.

That belongs in the Re-Opening Sewn Veins thread. Thanks.

Lastings isn't exactly setting the world on fire, either. Hitting .242 with 9 homers and 36 rbi.

Short-term, we're better off with Tatis -- though I'm sure Lastings would approve of the extended curtain call!

Certainly not out of the question - although he's no longer 'young' in prospect terms.

This is a portion of a recent John Sickels report (from about 2 weeks ago) on the players dealt in the Santana deal:

Deolis Guerra, RHP
* 10-5 for Class A Fort Myers, but with a 4.56 ERA, 56/47 K/BB in 105 innings, and a strong fly ball tendency.
Velocity is reportedly down. Still very young, but lots of work to do.

Carlos Gomez, OF
* Hitting .250/.284/.349 with 21 steals. Fun to watch due to glove and speed, but horrible plate discipline and lack of consistent power remain huge problems.
Big difference between tools and skills here.

Kevin Mulvey, RHP
* 4-8, 3.87 with 84/34 K/BB in 105 innings for Triple-A Rochester.
A bit disappointing, but still has a chance as an inning-eating strike-thrower.

Phil Humber, RHP
* 5.38 ERA with 70/42 K/BB in 94 innings, 107 hits and 16 homers allowed for Rochester.
Very disappointing, ratios are slipping across the board.
