Getting Stoked?

From Adam Rubin's NYDN blog:

There’s been no formal announcement from the Mets, but all signs continue to point to Brian Stokes starting Saturday for the Mets against Florida. The Mets don’t want to expose 21-year-old lefthander Jon Niese to the Marlins’ predominantly righty lineup. And the decision about which veteran to promote ended up pretty straightforward. Even though Claudio Vargas is not thought to be seriously injured, he was pulled from his last start – a scoreless effort – with grabbing in his elbow. Meanwhile, Nelson Figueroa has been dealing with a blister issue. Stokes has bullpen experience with the Rays, so it would figure he’d stick around after his start.

Maybe Favre can pitch.

And Bobby Parnell went yesterday for AA, so he's out.

Folks whose last name I know who have a Met share their name:

KC
John Cougar Lunchbucket
duan
Metfairy and husband
Ben Grimm (a spring training Met, anyhow)
Willets Pont
A Boy Named Seo

Almost everybody but me, it seems.

I share the same last name as one former Met great of recent vintage , although the spelling is slightly different , which probably disqualifies me. This player might well be known more for being a MFY great now though.

OK it seems to me that Duan's last name is Stokes....and he works for Hot Press who's long time editor shares that last name , although I can't imagine him as a baseball fan.

I've got only two big leaguers in history sharing my surname --- but one is a Hall of Famer and the other an All Star.

If you want I can just flip it around and share the first name of the first ever Met hitting coach (unofficial title)!

Sort of surprised to find out that there hasn't been a Major Leaguer with my last name to debut since 1895. I thought Connor was a reasonably common name.

There have been 5 with an added "O'", 3 with an added "s", and two active players using it as a first name, albeit one with a missing "n".

This also has probably been the most time I've ever spent thinking about my surname, and now it's starting to look funny in print.

No one with my surname has played for the Mets.

The most famous MLBer with my last name had 40+ save seasons in both the AL and NL in the 90s.

One MLBer with my last name as his first name had a famous lost no-hitter.

The saves thing is actually a good trivia question.

No one named Wetteland had a famous lost no-hitter.
Randy Myers also doesn't work.

That didn't take long. Bryan Harvey's '91 and '93 seasons were pretty sick.

It was the Haddux part of the clue that got me to figure it out.

No MLBers for me. This is all I've got in terms of a shared surname with notable peeps...

It's a stretch too because while the pronounciation is the same, the spelling is very different.

Art's definitely not a bad guy to 'share' a name with, but I was once asked if he and I were related.

I'm one of the whitest white guys you could ever meet.

One letter away. His time with the Mets was short. We had a Dan Murray ever so briefly.

I do have two Mets home jerseys with "Murray" on the back from Eddie's brief and cranky tenure.

I do, however, get the Iron Maiden lead guitarist and a jazz musician.

my last name is an Ellis island invention, and the only ones who share it are related to me. And we are a notoriously unathletic branch of the evolutionary tree Therefore, there have been no major leaguers (nor minor leaguers for that matter) much less former Mets with whom I've shared my moniker. And, unless my son has athletic talents of which i am currently unaware, there is unlikely to ever be one.

I'm 0-for-all major sports as well.

I'm still searching the Italian Baseball League, though.

My last name is 0-for-MLB.

Two former Mets have my first name for a last name. They were Met teammates for about a month, and there was exactly one game in which both of them played for the Mets.

The odds of a Met having my last name are wildly improbable, until Fboy is playing for them in 20 years or so anyway.

I've had several major leaguers, although no Mets.

Closest Met connection: a Hall-of-Famer has my last name as his first name although he uses common nickname. This HOFer has appeared at a few Met spring trainings in recent years to help the youngsters.

2 major leaguers with my last name, both played New York National League teams:
The first had 3 AB's with the Giants in 1914 and was apparently nicknamed "Desperate".
The second was a Mets pitcher that never panned out, throwing only 15 innings in his career during the HW Bush administration. He wound up with a career 2.30 ERA before he was traded for a player who was traded for Pedro Martinez.
