Wrigley/US Cellular Doubleheader

I didn't want to post about this before the fact, in case we didn't pull it off. But yesterday was MK's birthday, and we celebrated by blowing all of our frequent flyer miles to take him to Chicago. We hit the day game at Wrigley and the night game at US Cellular a/k/a New Comiskey. It was an incredible day, and very memorable.

My last trip to Wrigley was 17 years ago today - we had a two-year-old at the time, and were sitting in the upper level with an obstructed view. Yesterday we were on the field level, on the third base side, and I enjoyed Wrigley much more. It helped that the weather was perfect. Wrigleyville is an incredible neighborhood. There were lots of Cardinals fans in the house, but everyone was very well behaved, and we had a great time watching the extra innings win.

We went back to our hotel before the night game - between the side trip and some horrible traffic, we got to New Comiskey late. I don't know why it gets such a bad rap - it's a beautiful park, and a lovely place to see a game. I'll concur with the recent food reviews, though - my sausage was tasty but served on a soggy roll. The post-game fireworks was the cherry on top of an amazing day (the whipped cream was scoreboard watching and seeing the Mets win - when we left the Phillies were still in extra innings).

Pix will follow once we're back home.

You guys are like the ultimate baseball family.

Awesome trip, I'm jealous.

Nicely done.

Too bad you didn't say anything, I know this great bar called Mullens on Clark, about a block down from Wrigley, that I'd recommend to anyone visiting Wrigleyville.

We popped into Harry Caray's for a minute, which worked for us. With MK in tow, we kept the bar hopping to a minimum.

Sounds like an awesome Windy City trip!!

With Comiskey, where you sit makes all the difference. If you are in the lower bowl, it is a wonderful park.

But the upper deck is just way too steep for me. They've tried some things to make it more comfortable -- the overhang and eliminating some top rows -- but there's not a lot they can do.

Yeah that works, but that goes along with what my co-workers would call my dream "Jeets Bandwagon Bar & Grill!" A sports themed restaurant where the only teams on the television are in first place. =;)

Glad you had fun in Chi-Town. When I go back there sometime seeing a show of the Second City troupe is on my list of things to do, along with ordering a cheeseburger at the Billy Goat.

Glad it went off relatively hitchless. What a birthday present!

Relatively hitchless is an understatement. The flights were perfect, the weather was ideal, and the kid was totally shocked. The only fly in the ointment was that we were late to the second game, but basically this turned out better than I envisioned :)

Wrigley -

With Goose Gossage -

US Cellular Field -

The kid is going to remember this birthday for a very long time :)

I'm going to ask Bucket and Cooby to un-adopt me so you and D-Dad can do so.

Ah, shit. I wash hoping they wouldn't check this thread.

You can wait until we reap our game show winnings first, Dad!

Maybe I'll just adopt MiniWolf. I like how he makes raspberries every time he hears the word Yankees :)

Get any serious grief from anyone for the Met gear?

I mean I know MK is a young one but it still was Chicago!

Did The Goose have anything to say about the Met garb?

What did you tell him he was going to Chi-Town for?

No grief. Some high fives. Mostly he was viewed with curiosity. With the Cardinals and the Red Sox in town, the Mets gear wasn't on anyone's radar.

Goose didn't say anything about the Mets garb. We were mostly focusing on the fact that MK was a relief pitcher in Little League this season.

We didn't tell him we were going to Chicago in advance. We didn't even tell him that we were going to the airport in advance. We told him that we had a surprise for his birthday, and he'd find out everyting on a need to know basis. The day unfolded, one surprise at a time.

Does Chicago ever have a day/night doubleheader like the mets/yanks do with Shea and yankee stadiums? I don't think I've ever heard of any other city doing that... do other cities just never get rained out?

Did Goose get inducted as a member of the AutoTraders?

For the interleague games? No, there's been no game where the Cubs/White Sox have played each other twice in the same day but in 2 stadiums.

The MLB schedule is typically created so that -- like in New York -- the Cubs and White Sox are usually not playing home on the same day.

This year, however, the schedule has been a little screwy, and therefore there are some days when both teams are playing (against different opponents) in the same city.

I believe there was actually a day in April when the Mets were at Wrigley and the MFYs were at Comiskey.

Awesome shots!!!!!

I've worn Mets gear a number of times in Wrigley without incident. My buddy Will, a Chicago resident these days, says there are more Wrigley fans than Cubs fans, if that makes sense. It's a party place to go, to see and be seen. As he says, "Some of these people are here to watch a game, but it's not the one on the field."

That said, I love going there.

Nice t-shirt, too!

The Teds were big fans of US Cellular. Other than the long train ride for us, we had a much better time there than Wrigley. Ambiance only goes so far when there's only one restroom (a disgusting trough no-less) for every 5,000 people. Had a grand time chillin' with Willits on Sheffield, though.

They were sponsoring his appearance. And it showed.
