searching for a hotel

hey,

crazy question, my sister in law and her fella are going to NYC on 15th and staying for 3 nights.

So far all the hotels they've been looking at are crazy money even by Dublin standards at circa $500 per night.

Dates are 15-18th September, anyone any good tips?
They'd prefer a good manhattan location obviously.

We put guests up here before and nobody complained. Not the fanciest but a good central location and not too xpensive

Is there something going on that weekend? Those prices seem crazy high.

Check out the Marriott Courtyard on Third Avenue. I think it's called the Midtown. Last time I stayed there it was around $200. That's not to say it's not $500 now, but I'd be shocked if it was.

both those coming in between 1200-1500 for the 3 nights.

is this just insane?

Sheesh. Stay in Garden City.

There must be something going on that week.

Try it again (for curiosity's sake) a week earlier or later.

I'd hate to see what the schmancier ones are looking for.

Slumming in the outer boros isn't quite the shame it used to be.

it seems that the fancier ones aren't that much more expensive. ie $599 rather then 450.

even with the dollar being as week as it is it's still €300 per night and that's hefty.

It is crazy , I was going to suggest going downtown a bit but even a Holiday Inn in Lafayette Street is $400+ a night.

if they were flying into JFK i'd suggest trying to get somewhere cool on Long Island, but they're coming into Newark. Is there anywhere stylish in a nice part of Brooklyn.

Brooklyn is great, used to live in Bay Ridge but it is a bit of a trek on the train and with only 3 days in town they might not like that. Of course that was Bay Ridge and something closer to the city would be faster, we have people here that live in Brooklyn.

There's a Marriott in Brooklyn Heights that is pretty nice and about a 5 minute walk from the Brooklyn Bridge. I checked, they are $279 a night.

I had to check to see for myself, and it's unbelievable how high the rates are.

I did find this for $254.99:

Just checked - the Candlewood Suites in Jersey City has rooms for $230/night that week. About a six block walk to the PATH station at Exchange Place. Five minute ride from there to lower Manhattan. PATH runs 24/7, frequently during the day and - I think - every half hour at night.

I've seen the hotel from the outside and it looks fine.

Laws facilitating hotel development in shithole areas have resulted in a few boutiques opening in unexpected places bordering the nicer hoods. This one isn't far from me, the in-laws stayed there recently and liked it enough. Less expensive than Manhattan, they said, but prolly not cheap and located amid industry and the BQE, but also walking distance to W-burg and public transport:

Their sister joint is near Park Slope, same amenities/drawbacks:

This is the first I've heard of 231 Grand being the heart of the city, but considering the price on alternatives, they could do worse.

The rates in New York City are ridiculous. Now you know why I generally stay in northern New Jersey and drive in when I come up for a few days in the city. Nice rooms are generally available for $125-$150 a night, but the trade off is that you may be 10-40 miles out from Manhattan.

Unfortunately, such a location wouldn't meet the needs of Duan's sister-in-law. I wish you luck finding a decent place in NYC for under $250 a night.
