That's the best offensive team we can put on the field. Nice.

AG/DC
Aug 26 2008 02:23 PM

Two things I wanted to see here:

1) Beltran returned to the cleanup slot so Jamie Moyer can't pitch around Wright to get the lefthanded Delgado. Check.

2) An early, embarassing, and retirement-inducing exit for Moyer. Pending.

Aug 26 2008 02:24 PM

Would be great to win two here and then the Phillies go to Chicago for four.

Why is this a two game series , a little odd?

soupcan
Aug 26 2008 02:28 PM

'Cuz each team gets 9 at home and the Phillies had that 4 game set over 4th of July I guess.

BTW - Mets are 9-4 -v- Phils to date.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Aug 26 2008 02:31 PM

The next one we win vs the Phils assures we win the season series. Does that get us anything if we end in a tie or is that just the NFL?

soupcan
Aug 26 2008 02:33 PM

If the Mets and Phils tie for the division does head-to-head record determine the winner?

AG/DC
Aug 26 2008 02:35 PM

Last I checked, baseball still uses one-game playoffs.

Mendoza Line
Aug 26 2008 02:38 PM

I think head-to-head determines the division winner if the other team gets the wild card. If the other team would miss the playoffs entirely, then there's a play-in game.

Frayed Knot
Aug 26 2008 02:39 PM

It's a one-game playoff only to determine playoffs or not.
But if the loser of a tied division will be the WC team then the head-to-head winner gets declared to Division Winner.

The last time Jamie Moyer pitched less than six innings against the Mets:

...

Oh wait, it's never happened. Dude OWNS the Mets.

7-4, 2.85 in eighteen career starts, dating back to when he was a teammate of Davey Lopes. He gave up six runs in the third inning in a game in 2006, and was slapped around a bit by Keith Hernandez and Tim Teufel in August 1986 (in a game the Cubs won), but other than those two starts, it's sixteen starts with never more than three ER.

Would have liked to see more there but I'll take it.

2-0 Mets outta the gate.

Zvon
Aug 26 2008 05:31 PM

Martinez does not look like he has the greatest stuff tonight.

Rollins doubles and he hits Utley in the foot.
TRIPLE PLAY TIME!

Zvon
Aug 26 2008 06:04 PM

Wow. We caught a break there.

Beltran off 3rd hit by a Tatis grounder.
Ump says he was in foul territory.
He wasn't.

seawolf17
Aug 26 2008 06:04 PM

Okay, Fernando. Caught a little break there. Make 'em pay.

I didn't notice in the Playbill tonight that the part of Davey Lopes is being played by a very tan Billy Joel.

The first Met in history with four 100-RBI seasons.

Strawberry had 97 in '84 and 93 in '86.

David Wright is the ÜberMet.

Ryan Howard is on pace for 213 strikeouts. That's fucking insane. I know he's hit 34 home runs, but if you're hitting .220 and striking out every third time up, that's sad.

It is insane and so's the fact he leads the NL with 109 RBI.
But Wrights gonna pass him down the stretch during this pennant run and snatch up the MVP award he was denied last year.

Phils get on the board with a walk, hit and sac fly.

7-1 Mets.

Pretty amazing considering the lumber that can drive 'em in in droves the Mets have had through the years.

Kingman, Staub, Strawberry, Carter, Foster, Piazza, etc.

Rollins is trying to win this game all by himself.

Zvon
Aug 26 2008 07:04 PM

Knew this wasn't gonna be a walk in the park.
Phils pitcher doubles and Rollins homers him in.

7-3

Was hoping to see 7 (or more) out of Martinez but I fear that was wishful thinking.
He's almost up to 90 pitches.

Utley draws a walk and Stokes gets up in the pen.

metsguyinmichigan

Zvon
Aug 26 2008 07:28 PM

Reyes on 1st, no out, 3rd baseman way deep--that was not a bad place to lay one down.

Wright pops out to right and the Phils will change pitchers.

Had a chance again there.

AG/DC
Aug 26 2008 08:16 PM

Cycles should include walks.

The base-reaching cycle:

Hit
Walk
Reach on error
Hit by pitch
Catcher's interference.

I think there are two other ways to reach base. I imagine we could go another few hundred years before somebody reaches base seven different ways in one game.

Fman99
Aug 26 2008 08:16 PM

Wow. Another GIDP.

Another wasted late-inning hitting display by the Mets. Let's see if it bites them in the ass.

Frayed Knot

Rockin' Doc
Aug 26 2008 08:21 PM

Well, the strike out and run when the catcher fails to hold on to the pitch is probably a more likely way to reach than catcher interference. For the life of me, I can't think of a seventh way to reach first base safely.

I'd be shocked if AlReyes doesn't get an August call up so that he could theoretically pitch in October. Not that I know who gets moved in the roster shuffle...

Playoff Rosters: Playoff rosters must be set at 25, not including disabled players, on August 31. For each player on the 60-day DL, teams may add players to the eligible list during the playoffs at the same position, provided that they were in the orginization on August 31… Teams must choose 25 players from their playoff eligible list before each round of the playoffs.

so since everyone has some players on the 60-day DL there are always going to be extra choices come october 1st.

Actually, no. Exhaustion from jet lag may have helped, though.

I went to bed at 10, woke up at 12, watched the end of the game, and went back to bed at around 2.
