The Mets magic number to clinch their division is ... 35.

Not that I'm counting magic numbers but just now, I did calculate the Mets magic number.

When your magic number equals the number of games you have left to play, there's really no point in keeping track of it.

The way things stand right now, to guarantee a division championship with out help from anyone, they need to go 32-3 the rest of the way. Hardly magical.

There's still loads of baseball to be played, and I'm looking forward to it. If we're up by more than 7 games with less than 17 to play, I'll be much more excited.

I'll take the blame for that.

But in my defense, the Mets were up. Heck, there was a Kevin Kiernan Post column right around this time that declared the division over because of how the Mets handled the Dodgers during a weekend series.

Oh, and a few more, 5 games in 13 days against the Phills, sandwiched around a pesky (when playing the Mets) Marlin squad, and the WC leading Brewers.

A lot of work to be done to be worrying about what the number to win the divisional title is.

That's an excellent question. I pondered it myself when I first posted that picture. Piazza's wearing a pre-game batting practice uniform, that I was certain until I saw that picture, that was only worn from 1995-97 when the Mets went back to a modernized version of their original uniforms (with uni #'s on the front).

I though they ditched those warmups in '98 when they added black. I have a picture of Al Leiter wearing that bluer warmup, but it's from Spring Training. So I always assumed that the Mets wore their 95-97 warmups in Spring Training of '98 and waited until the regular season to unveil their black unis and black warmups.

But that Piazza picture kills that theory because, as you know, Piazza was still a Dodger during Spring Training of '98.

By the way, it appears that we'll never get to see this number on this thread

as the upcoming series with the Phils will guarantee odd numbers here for a while.

Try earlier. If you look closely at the sleeve logo, you can see the little "NY" superimposed on the skyline, on the left side of the logo. It removed between the 1998 and 1999 seasons.

Those aren't drop shadows. They might be real shadows, though. This is the jersey (1995-98):

Looking through Getty, it seems to be the 1999 road BP jerseys.

Dated January 1, 2000 along with a bunch of other File Photo-type deals from the prior season.

And yes, they are drop shadows. The black was added to the Mets scheme in 1998, so the ones you posted naturally aren't going to have them. But both angles on the Piazza photos show a pretty distinct drop-shadow, as does what I'd have to assume is the home version of that jersey.

Dated March, 1999.

Jeets: I've given some thought to your comment and have come to the conclusion that mentioning "games behind" is more or less the same thing as mentioning "magic numbers". In fact, each concept quantifies the same thing, but from a different perspective. The magic number is a more precise measure because to say that the Mets are in first place by a half a game takes on a different meaning depending on whether the half game lead is in the middle of May or on September 29th. There is less uncertainty when discussing the magic number. On that basis, I cannot logically rationalize why it would be acceptable to talk about the Mets lead in the standings, but unacceptable to mention the more precise magic number.

I hope I have illuminated this discussion. Mag on, bro!

There's nothing wrong with noting the magic number. It's a yardstick that tells us what needs to be done.

I just don't think it should have the feel of a countdown, as if a clinching was inevitable.

Aha! A voice of reason! But how would you know whether someone is noting, and not counting down? Wouldn't there be overlap between the two conditions or are they always mutually exclusive? Is it possible to note without counting down? By the way, there's nothing inevitable here; according to ESPN's playoffs odds, the Phillies are likelier than the Mets to make the playoffs (56.3% to 47.9%) notwithstanding the Mets half game lead.

Take note of this Dave Magadan playing card, below. It's a three of hearts.

="batmagadanleadoff"]I'm not celebrating anything. Were you celebrating when you started last year's magic number thread at 130?

To be fair, that was a fucking joke thread, not meant for a serious start of any countdown.

But the Big Ever Lovin' Blue Eyed Thing is correct, this thread is still somewhat unseemly with a 1 game lead on Labor Day.

I'll cease with the Presidential countdown until it gets closer to the guys who signed the Constitution. And even then things might still be dicey.

Hell, the thing about that thread was that 2 years ago, there were no Phillies or Braves or Marlins nibbling on the Mets ass all summer. The Mets even survived the shutdown of the season of one of the major cogs in the pen at the deadline, and still won the division going away.

Not to mention it reached 15 on this date two years ago.

25 with 25 games left to play this year? Things seem dicey to say the least.

I would agree. In fact, I would go one step further and say that any argument for or against is dumb.

Especially the against arguments.

This is a fucking joke thread too, Jeets. No joking! OK? That's all I ever do around here. Joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, joke.

Joke!

So let's see if we can satisfy everyone.

Less celebrating. More noting. And no NASA.
Got it.

And you Jeets: more fucking joking to go along with your Presidents. Because if you're not fucking joking whenever you post a Presidential photo in this thread, why should I get the fucking blame?

(During the '73 World Series, Don Hahn was the Mets centerfielder and de facto right fielder given that Rusty Staub couldn't throw the ball more than 20 feet).

Who says I'm not getting blamed here, and as well the one I started last year.

In fact, look at that thread from two years ago. Nowhere in the title does it actually state Magic Number Countdown. Would Ben like it better if this thread was titled "Standings: Process of Elimination" and was more geared in knocking off each divisional rival (or other in terms of making sure the WC is within grasps just in case, FWIW it is Philly isn't that far in back of Milwaukee, and is a game ahead of the Cards). Probably.

It got to be magical in the ebb and flow of the thread two years ago.

Oh and, only a few select people around here can call me Jeets, okay. Right now, you are not one of them!

Don Hahn is kind of a hard name to say. You'd think he'd go by Donny Hahn or something to make it easier.

And speaking of Don Hahn, the other Mets centerfielder that season was so washed up, his once legendary skills so eroded, that most other MLB teams weren't willing to carry him on their rosters, even if he was willing to play for free. Yet hardly any Met's supposed to be allowed to wear his old uniform anymore. Strange.

No, I hate the name, player, and the Yankees, but I'm called that by Kase, Seawolf, JCLB Ben, and any number of Cranepoolers who refer to me as such because its a joke based on posts where I sound too Yankee-fan ish, have a weekend plan at MFYS, openly defend certain things the Yankees do or players through the years.

Coming from them it's good natured forum ribbing. Coming from a newbie like you, it seems like someone trying to fit in with the "cool crowd." There's the difference.

That's not true. Actually I've ordered a copy of "How to Tell Whether Someone is Celebrating the Mets Present Magic Number or Merely Noting it" from amazon.com. The website notes that 34% of all customers who ordered that book also purchased "Celebratory Posts or Merely Noting: Who gets to decide?"

I hope this will help.

I'm giving this thread a rest for an unknown amount of time. How long? I don't really know. Maybe a day. Maybe three weeks. I honestly don't know. It goes without saying that anyone else is obviously free to continue this theme - so I won't say it since it goes without saying.

The Mets reduced their magic number by 12 since this thread was created 11 days ago, an outstanding record setting pace.* At that continued rate, the Mets would clinch the division with more than a week of regular season left to play, more than enough time to set up their rotation for the NLDS and to heal many of the usual player aches and pains that accumulate over the course of a season.

Let's just see what all these bad karma vibes are supposed to be about that worry some of you broken mirror seven years of bad luckers. Let's see what the Mets do with this thread in limbo. There's no jinx on my watch.

_____

* To illustrate just how phenomenal the Mets present magic number reducing rate is, the Mets would have clinched the division five days ago, last August 27, had they maintained this pace since Opening Day. When was the last time a baseball team clinched their division a week before Labor Day?
