Cursed Out

It's a job hazard in my line of work but today took the cake and a few danishes besides. Juana is not a healthy-minded woman. Angry, mentally ill, and drug-addicted --- she looks for conflict and revs it up from zero to sixty like her last name is Waltrip. I tolerate her more than I should because there's a limited amount of improving she seems capable of. And when I kick her out she disappears for a few weeks and comes back 40% better behaved. I pissed her off today and got called a couple of things in Spanish. "Juana," I said, "no tenemos una problema." I continued about my business while she carried on. I heard her saying something in Spanish about my mother and about the police, but didn't quite pick i t up. When I have a few minutes, I talk to my friend Paul, who has better Spanish than I do and a placid demeanor that works well with folks who are raving. He's smiling at me and blushing so I ask him what she said. He took great pains to get every word out just as she said it, "I don't care, you son of a bitch. Go ahead and call the police and have them drag me off and shave my vagina. I don't care." Apparently, Juana didn't care. Not today, anyhow.

Juana = loco. You probably wouldn't want to be near that shearing, though.

Si, ella = muy loco. Poor thing. I'm not so sure that sort of thing hasn't happened to her in her life. She's Cuban and Cuba doesn't have a history of dealing well with the mentally ill.

Well, they had a policy in the early Reagan years of exporting them all to the US, notably the Mariel Boatlift. I wouldn't be surpised if Juana was part of that flotilla.

Juana disappeared for a week and returned yesteday. I gave her a special privelege, and she spent the rest of the evening smiling at me like a sweetheart. Kinda creeped me out, but I think we're cool for now.
